Introducing new tastes?

When would you start introducing new tastes to your LO?  My pedi said I could dip her paci in sugar, but I was just wondering if anyone else has tried anything else....like whip cream, jello water, etc....TIA

Re: Introducing new tastes?

  • I have never heard of this and certainly my pedi never recommended it.  You don't need to introduce tastes until they start on solids at 4-6 months.  Even then they just warn you not to do much sweet - make sure you do some veggies too.  I don't see the point of dipping a nipple in something sugar at this young of an age.

  • Oh wow, I would not dip Simon's pacifier in sugar. That's just begging for all kinds of trouble, it seems.

So far Simon has tasted strawberry flavor (his Prevacid), prune juice and unfortunately... Pee. I'm gonna try to keep it that way for at least another month or two, depending on what my pedi says.

  • I've heard of sugar on a pacifier to cure hiccups, but thought that was really old school thinking. I certainly dont think there's a need to introduce baby to "new tastes" before they start on solids, and it's certainly not something I've heard of being recommended before.

  • I'll be doing it when we start solids.
  • I haven't done any of it yet.  My pedi is def old school and i guess that's why he reccomended the sugar.  I was just curious to see.  I def DON'T want anything going into her mouth besides formula.
