anyone skip an infant seat and go straight to convertible?
my friend mentioned that i might want to do this. has anyone else done this? are convertibles safe for newborns?

You want the ability to move baby without waking them. The infant carseat is a life saver!!
i thought about it but like kimarino said the infant seat makes it much easier to move a sleeping baby. and with two, i think the convenience of the infant seat makes it a no-brainer.
ETA but yes, convertibles are safe for newborns.
Try picturing removing 2 infants from a seat to carry them into places.
What will you do with them once you're inside a house? A restaurant? A grocery store?
And... how will you get the second one out while you're holding the first one?
I just don't see how you do this with twins.
The logistics don't make sense.
The carrier is insanely handy when they're not sitting up yet.

This exactly! Trust me, you will LOVE having an infant seat. It allows you to eat in restaurants, go shopping, etc. much easier than having to hoist the baby out of the seat each time...especially when they are napping.
Course, it may be different when it's twins. I just know that I loved having the infant seat.
I'll say that we're planning to try to skip the infant car seat and go straight to the convertible. I'm planning to use a sling a lot anyway... I have no interest in carrying a baby in a carrier into a grocery store. But I realize I may decide we need an infant seat, too, once she gets here.
However, I think I would definitely want infant seats with twins!
I used both a sling and an infant carrier, and it was nice to have both options. We did bring her home and use a convertible seat for the first two weeks (we hadn't installed the infant seat), and it was fine, but she did wake up taking her in and out of the seat. In some restaurants, the carrier was easier (if the space between the seat and table was narrow, sometimes it was a tight squeeze with a sling).
We rarely take her in DH's car, so instead of buying an extra base, we got a TrueFit off of woot.com for $99 (it fits a newborn very well, well padded, etc.).
With twins, I think I would go with the carriers.
However, most people say that you can go for the ones with the lower weight limits because most babies will outgrow them by height first and by they time they reach 22ish pounds, plus a 9 pound carrier, they will be too heavy to carry easily. I think the difference between the SnugRide 32 and the lower weight one is about $50.
