Babies: 0 - 3 Months

overfeeding???

A previous post got me thinking..

I thought it was imposible to overfeed a baby. My LO eats between 3 and 4 oz every 2 to 3 hours.

He's been gaining 2+ oz a day.  I've been to a couple different dr's and they've all been really pleased with this.  No one has ever said anything to me about him gaining too much weight.

What do you guys think, is it possible to overfeed a baby?

Re: overfeeding???

  • LO is gaining like crazy. Both pedi's we've seen are thrilled.

She actually eats about 3 oz a feeding at 2 weeks. She eats a lot.

Why do you say that? What would be the down side if you did overfeed the baby?

  • i dont know about the overfeeding but ur LO is absolutely ADORABLE :)
  • Well, I haven't responded to that post yet, but my pedi did mention that it's a possible reason why my LO is having spit-up problems. So she recommended limiting DD2 to 10 minutes of nursing at a time, and nursing on the same side several times in a row instead of switching back and forth, to make sure she's getting enough hindmilk. I'm also going to be cutting out dairy and keeping her upright for awhile after feedings, and hopefully all that will help.

DD2 was gaining nearly 2 oz. a day in the first two weeks. I BF on demand and she does a good bit of comfort nursing, so I'm sure she's been getting quite a bit of milk when she's not really hungry. She eats so much that sometimes she's got milk coming out her nose, which to me says that her tummy is probably overflowing. :)

My DD1 ate a ton as well, gained fast, and had no issues with reflux. I think a lot of it depends on the baby. I don't think it's possible to BF them so much that they're gaining too much weight, but I think if you have a baby who is prone to reflux, they may need to eat a little less at a time than they would on their own so that they're not as likely to spit it back up.

At least, that's what I'm hoping!

well i was told i was over feeding my baby because he was throwing up.. not spitting up.. but throwing up.. a babys belly isnt all that big..

but normally, he eats 1-2oz a day. we had some issues with BFing so we went to formula, i blamed it on that. but i was told over feeding had something to do with it.. so that would be the down side?

so that is why i said its possible.. anything is..

  • Simon was eating 5 oz every 3-4 hours but was spitting up like a madman. It is possible that he has reflux, but the doc had me decrease his food to 4 oz every 2-3 hours. He is spitting up slightly less. (He is a healthy 13pds now). Anyway, I think the worst thing that happens when your overfeed is that they spit up what they didn't need. Then you have precious milk all over you and not where it needs to be.

  • This is interesting to me because a couple of times recently LO vomited (and I mean vomited) up several ounces of his food.

I figured that he just had a gas bubble, but then again, he is gaining a lot of weight.

Plus I know he eats more than the recommended 2.5 times his weight, so maybe he is overfed.  Hmmm..

Personally, I'm not great at reading LO's cues, he acts hungry all the time when he's awake, and he will just eat and eat - he doesn't push the bottle out of his mouth or whatever.  So it's pretty hard to tell.

  • The doctor in the hospital said - and i quote - "unlike adults, babies stop eating when theyre full". and when on the occasion that they dont, theyll spit up. so youre fine!

  • My DC was overfeeding DS, I confirmed with my pedi.  DS had colic, and although he was much, much better by the time I went back to work, he was still fussy and high maintenance.  DC would feed him and feed him and feed him until he was in a "food coma".  They gave my 4 MO 11 oz in one sitting.  I saw red.  They said he wouldn't stop fussing, so they kept feeding him.  YEAH, he's a baby, he fusses, it doesn't ALWAYS mean he's hungry.  DS's pedi says that a baby should never need more than 8 oz or so in a single feeding.

  • I asked when Zaiden ate 8 oz within a matter of a few hours. He was honestly hungry, but I swear we were overfeeding him. When I asked the pedi about it she specifically said if they are not spitting it up you are good. Their stomach can only hold so much and what they can't hold will come back up.He did not spit up one ounce of the 8oz.
  • With formula, yes. BF, it's a lot harder to overfeed. The only way I know if my LO is overfed is if he mondo pukes right away. That's happened only 2 times.
  • It is possible to overfeed a baby.  It is more common in bottle fed babies, but I overfed my breastfed baby according to my pedi.  I fed her when she cried trying to feed on demand, so she nursed for comfort even though she wasn't really hungry.  Overfed babies can be misdiagnosed as having reflux.  They spit up a lot, fuss near, during, or after feeding time, are usually gassy.  They also gain weight quickly.  In addition to the immediate problems, it can lead to childhood obesity.

This exactly.  It's easy to determine that every cry means hunger but it doesn't... even if eating calms them down.  Sometimes they need a diaper change or need to be held, not to eat.
