So today I was out shopping with my mom and we came across a sale on bassinets. I was oodling them and my mom said I don't need one of those. She said that from day one we need to have the baby in the crib in it's own room and not in our room because then you have to try and transition the baby into it's own room and that can be a hassel. It seems like a lot of you on here are big fans of having the bassinet in your room. What do you guys think?

I was not planning on getting a bassinet...crib from day one, BUT, my brothers best friend has a beautiful bassinet that he is giving us so we are going to use it for naps and sleeping at night for a short time only.
I am all for crib early on so I will wing it on when to switch from bassinet to crib
I'm keeping the baby in our room until whenever we feel ready for it to be in it's own room. Maybe until a year or so, but we'll see what works for us when the baby is here.
Check out The Baby Book by Dr. Sears for some info on the subject. It's actually really helpful in making a decision.
This exactly except that I had a different bassinet. I have had two children that I had in bassinets and then transferred to cribs. No problem either time. GL with whatever you decide.
I think the bassinet definitely is a generational thing, because I always hear people my mother's age say that they're unnecessary. We did not have a bassinet, per se, with DS. We did, however, have a Pack N' Play with a bassinet insert that we used in our room. It was so much easier having him close when he woke up (he didn't cry for long before we heard him, so he didn't wake himself beyond the point of going back to sleep). It also eased some of my SIDS fears, being able to check on him regularly. If we would have gone from pseudo-bassinet to crib, we would have been fine. We went from bassinet to co-sleeping and it was definitely hard to get DS out of our bed at four years old. But, we've managed to make it work, by making his big boy bed a rewarding time for him.
I would recommend doing the PNP bassinet for a more cost-effective alternative to a traditional bassinet if you're really on the fence.
That's awesome that you have the cradle from when you were a baby. I asked my mom if she had any of me and my brothers stuff and she said no. Hahahahaha, it would just be nice to have something of mine that we could pass along through the generations.
We used a cradle in our room with DS for about 4 months. We had no porblem transitioning him to the crib (other than my speration anxiety!)
It was really nice to have him right there for night feeding. A lot of pack and plays come with a bassinet, so you might be able to use that instead of purchasing a second one.
This is what we will be using as well (one of their side-by-side sleepers). You should look at Dr. James McKenna's research on co-sleeping (baby being in your room)---statistic show that SIDS rates are lower. Also, our Midwife says mothers who nurse will get MUCH more sleep if the baby is within "arms reach" throughout the night!
I think it's up to you and what you want to do. For us the best thing was DS in his crib from day 1.

Did it say why this was recommended? Just curious.

We are also doing the pack n play with the bassinet insert in our bedroom. I feel that a lot of the bassinets are overpriced for the short amount of time you actually use them. We'll get plenty of use out of the PNP later on too.
