3rd Trimester

Honest Opinions: Would you ...

Ive had 2 fast deliveries thus far. Both times I was over a week past my due date.

This time I am due July 8th. Id love for my baby to be born on the 4th of july. I just think itd be an awesome bday.

My OB said she would induce that day but of course cant promise anything.

Would you 'tempt fate' or let your body do its thing and not try to be so picky about the date? Im concerned that I may jinx my easy labors by inducing early.

And of course I understand that this stuff is hard to plan - who knows, i could spontaneously go into labor earlier - or on that date on my own. Theres no telling. But given the option - would you induce?

No, I wouldn't induce just to have a "fun" birthday!

  • I would absolutely not induce for ANY reason unless it was absolutely medically necesary.  There are just too many risks and I think it is silly to risk your child's and your health for that matter just so the baby can have a certain birthday.
  • i personally wouldnt mess with induction just to get the baby to have a cool bday.

Forgot to say, if they induce on the 4th, you may not hve the baby until the 5th!
  • Having a birthday is not as much as having a birthday NEAR a cool holiday. With that said I think inducing for this reason is silly. Let nature take its course.

  • Nope. I'd hold out for my "easy" delivery no matter when that takes place! Not only that, but I was induced with DS and will be induced again this time too... just once I'd love for my baby to be able to pick his/her birthday!

  • I think baby's birthday is special enough in its own right.  Having to share the day with a holiday or family member seems like it would take some of the luster off the date.  That's why I'm praying I don't deliver on my EDD, which is Mother's Day.
  • No I would wait.

  • I would let nature take its course. Plus, personally, I would prefer that my child NOT have a birthday on a holiday. It would make planning birthday parties harder, since their friends might be out of town or have family plans on the 4th of July when they get older.  Plus it's nice when they get their very own fun day, not a day that is already a fun holiday. Just my opinion...
  • I'd hate to have a birthday on a holiday.

Close to it?  Yes.  The exact holiday?  No.

Also inducing for a cool birthday is probably the lamest shiit I've ever heard, and you will not find anyone who is more laid back about inductions/c-sections than I am.

Forgot to say, if they induce on the 4th, you may not hve the baby until the 5th!

yeah - thats exactly why my OB said she cant promise anything.

My hunch was that its not a good idea. Especially since Ive had easy labors to date, why test fate? :P

  • No I would never induce-and the medical staff will tell you the same thing. Baby will come when he/she is ready-not to have a "cool" or "fun" birthday.
  • One of my Bf's birthday is the 4th- she loves it bc there's always a party to go to and she get's her bday off work. But also hates it bc everyone has their own plans for that day and she never really gets to celebrate her birthday the way she wants.

Did you induce with your 1st two since they were late?  If not, I would be too scared to unless medically necessary.  I hear those contractions are the WORST kind of pain.  I'd pass on that if I were you :)

  • No I wouldn't ask for a specific birth date.

The funny thing about that is that for some reason I have this "thing" about even days - I like them better than odd days. So when I was induced with my first for pre-e on March 11th, I mentioned it to my sister about how she'd have an odd birth date.  Well be careful what you wish for - after 21 hours of labor, I got my even birth date of March 12th!  This time I don't care - he can come whenever the heck he wants, odd/even doesn't matter :)

  • I wouldn't.  If you have quick, easy labors why even risk an unsuccessful induction leading to a c/s?

gold poster and thats the lamest sht youve heard?? lol.

    exaggerate much?

  • I would wait. My sister is a 4th of July baby and she absolutely hates it. Her friends are never in town if she wants to celebrate on her actual b-day. The only positive she's ever said about it is that she gets to play with fireworks on her birthday. (Just an possible point of view of your child)

  • you really should only induce if there's a problem with the baby's or your health

  • I wouldn't.  Like the others said - don't tempt fate and honestly I don't think I'd like having my birthday on a holiday.

Whatever you do - good luck!

this is my brothers bday and hes always thought it was a great day. When he was little thought the fireworks were for him. lol. We joke that he still believes theyre for him. ;0)

  • Nope, wouldn't induce.
  • I'm actually surprised your doctor would allow you to be induced for no medical reason before your due date. Mine won't even think of inducing me until 41 weeks. When we talked about it, she said we would try to avoid induction if at all possible - it can cause hard and painful labor and ultimately lead to a c-section. And all for a cool birthday? I have to agree with preppy, that's some pretty lame shiit.

My OB in fact favors inducing in my case - because it would ensure that I : A) get all the antibiotics for the GBS and B) dont end up delivering at home with my history of quick labors.

By the time I made it to the hospital and realized my contractions were regular, both of my DDs were born only 1 to 1.5 hours later. With GBS+, I should be getting 4 hours worth of antibiotics.

So technically - it is medical but she only encourages it and is not saying its absolutely NECC.

Believe it or not Ive never been in favor of inducing - but because of her reasoning and my lame desire for what I think is a "cool" bday - Ive actually started considering it.

also - Both of my DDs were fine & had no issues with the GBS since they were only in the birth canal for a very short period.

  • To be perfectly honest, I'm hoping that our little man arrives on or around the 4th I love that holiday and everyones festive!! I'm tiny and hes measuring large so we'll see but the drs are predicting that he'll arrive early July.
  • Okay I'm confused... you want your kid to have a cool birthday yet your not sure you want to induce, but your doctor said she would induce...

Then when people give you opinions, and honest ones, you make snarky comebacks like your a gold poster and this is the lamest sh!t...blah blah blah. And the lame part of you wants your kid to have a cool birthday, even though you know its a risk to your child.

SO....why in the hell ask for honest opinions if your not going to take them? You have no medical issues to get induced early, and you've never had issues with previous deliveries...so what you want your kid to have a birthday on a holiday?

That's like a birthday on Christmas...in the long run when you tell your kid "hey mommy planned this for you" and it says "I hate you" well then.... its your own damn fault... and thats my HONEST opinion.

  • i wouldn't.

and, FWIW, my birthday is july 9th and i'm SUPER glad that it's not july 4th. i would not want my birthday to be overshadowed by a national holiday every single year. yes, i'd get to celebrate big, but no, it would never be my very own personal holiday. i'd always be competing with the whole entire country!

  • They gave me pitocin during my labor with DS because I wasn't progressing and I can tell you without a doubt my contractions after pitocin were MUCH more painful than they were before.

I wouldn't do it. And I would prefer not to have my baby on a holiday.

  • Emm-have your births been considered Precipitous? I was at my sisters house for her  Precipitous birth and that was scary! Water broke and 3 contractions later she could feel the baby's head!

Yeah but it is pretty lame when you've already been through labor 2 times and yet you would want to alter your LO's birthday in order to have a cool birthday, which I don't think is all that cool. I would think that in itself is crazy and falls up there with the other crazies that come around.

And if you had a hunch that it was a bad idea, why are you still pondering it?

I would LOVE to go naturally when baby is ready, but with complications that's just not possible...so its either induction or csection...and I don't really want either, but there is no choice.

I would just think you would like to have a good birth experience, rather than one that could turn into a nightmare and make your labor worse and harder for your LO to handle.

My OB has never used this term with me - I wonder if I fall in that category? She is definitely concerned with this delivery being too fast.

(I guess those are important details that I left out of the post. I just dont come here for medical advice - rather I wanted to confirm that 'picking' the bday was silly. I'll sort out if its medically a good idea with my OB.)

With my first I woke up leaking fluid & she was born less than 4.5 hours later. With my 2nd, I came in walking & talking thru contrax but delivered an hour to hour and half later. I was having contrax at home just took a while to realize it was "it".

Did your sister INTEND to birth at home?

Theres more that goes into me pondering an induction than the bday - But I brought this up because I wanted to know what people thought of it. I wanted to hear the people who were born on holidays and loved/hated it, the people who were induced and it went horribly/smoothly ...

I dont necc care for strangers to weigh in on if they think its medically necc for me to induce. I'll sort the serious stuff out with my OB. The lame stuff I'll bring here for your hormonal release & entertainment.

  • let LO come when ready.  with induction you can get into some sticky territory if you don't progress enough or if LO starts to go under duress.  I always hate the risk of c/s associated with inductions.  Just go with the flow!

I'm actually not releasing my hormones on you, so thanks. And entertainment no...there is much better entertainment on the T.V. I'm sure.

And if you don't necessarly care for strangers to weign in on if they think its medically necessary for you to induce or not, then why ask a question. Your going to get answers that don't agree with what information you've given because you haven't given all the information. Of course, everyone is going to say that it's lame and stupid for you to induce for no reason. But yet you have a reason, you just didn't care to share.

I think it's stupid to come for advice and honest opinions, when you don't give all the facts. Yes, it is stuff you sort with your OB, but it tends to irritate people when only given half the information.

So here you go--so far the majority think its a stupid idea and I do believe only one said she liked having her birthday close to the holiday, another said her brother thought the fireworks were for him not for the actual holiday and all others said the kid would hate it in the long run.

I do believe everyone said inductions suck and they wouldn't wish it on anyone because the pain is so much worse.

So there are your honest opinions.
