Trying to Get Pregnant

If you were not TTC...

would you go back on BCP or would you use what you know from TCOYF?

I hate BCP and have only taken them for a few months when I was younger when the dr. told me they would make cramps easier to deal with. I have no interest on ever being on them again and told DH this. He hates condoms and said he wants to get a vasectomy when we are through having kids, that all seems to final for me.

Re: If you were not TTC...

  • i stopped BCP a long time ago b/c i hated the s/e...i will definitely use charting to avoid + condoms until we are done having kids.  though DH may not know it, he will be getting a vasectomy at that point.
  • Loading the player...
  • I haven't been on BC for 5 years due to migraine issues so we are a condom couple.  Charting certainly will be helpful also.

  • We want two kids eventually and I've already told DH that I don't want to go back on BCP's between whenever the first one comes and the second. After the second I would go back on just because it was nice to know when to expect AF. Plus I could make it "disappear" if I wanted to if AF was going to come while on vacation or something.

  • Good question. I had no issues being on BCP, I was on it for 9 years with no break. I am not sure if I will go back on it if we have a child and are waiting to have a second.

I think I would talk to my doctor about other options so that my hormones don't have to be out of whack again. I've never had cramps or heavy periods on or off BC, so the only benefit they offered (aside from the obvious) was regularity.

Once we are done having kids, DH is getting a vasectomy, he is all for it.

  • I might, but only because it helps so much with the PCOS.  If I can get by cyst free without it, I would prefer charting to avoid.

  • I was only on BCPs for a short time several years ago and they totally messed up my body! I had to have two lumps (one being a tumor) surgically removed from my breasts. They also made me feel horrible. I'm all for the FAM method:)

  • Nope, I never plan on going back on BCP again after how much ot screwed with my cycles.

The only good thing about them was that my skin was so clear.  Now, not so much:(

  • An IUD is an amazing thing!!! I had one for over 3 years when I had it removed and got pregnant (unknowingly) a few days after it was taken out. The one I had didn't have hormones so I didn't have to worry about anything. It's not something to use if you think you want it taken out soon for another one, but I think I will get another one eventually depending on what we decide when we are finished having kids, we really haven't talked about it. Seriously, the best thing ever!!!

  • I was on them for 18 months in my entire life, I never wanted to be on them in the first place and I will never go on them again.  It is up to DH if he ever wants a vasectomy, so we will always TTA when we are done.

  • I won't really have a choice about going back on BCP. I have PCOS and don't get AF without BCP or Provera. I will have to go back on the pill.

Same here. Besides, I wouldn't be that upset if we had two close together. Now, once we are done having kids, I'm not sure yet what we'll do. I would prefer that DH get a vasectomy, but he's not totally on board with that idea just yet.

  • NEVER go back to BCP again! I bought TCOYF about 2 years ago, but at that time we were absolutly not looking to TTC AT ALL! I was so scared to use it in case it failed. HOWEVER, now that I have been charting (we have been TTA until May-ish), I realize how super easy it is! I plan on using charting after baby/

Funny note: We have a close friend who is 40 weeks pregnant. This is her second one - and it came faster than they would have liked. When we were out Friday night at dinner, her and I were talking about birth control. She was talking about what to use after she had the baby. I said, "Have you ever thought about charting?!?" She got a funny look on her face and then just pointed to her belly saying, "Thats how this one got here." Apparently, charting for TTA doesn't work for everyone Stick out tongue

  • If we had gotten pg sooner, maybe. But at this point, there is no way that I'll go back on BCPs.

  • I was on BCP's for about 10 years and never gave it a second thought.  Our church had us take an NFP class (natural family planning) as part of our requirements to get married, and it really opened our eyes.  Coming into TTC all I had was the NFP stuff to go off of, but from just being here and listnening to all these ladies, and taking their advice (buying TCOYF) I've learned a whole lot more.  I can't say that I'll ever go back to BCP's again.  DH and I would like to use FAM and NFP combined as our birth control when we get to the point that we are not trying to concieve.

  • i never went back on BC after ds was born and i am happy about that choice.

once our family is complete (hoping that it will be some day) dh will prob have a vasec.

  • I didn't have a problem with them and if I planned to not TTC for a long time I would consider using them again.  I wouldn't use them in between kids, though.

  • I'll be charting and using condoms or some other form of non-hormonal BC. NO PILLS!
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • No BCP here, nor any hormonal birth control.  I plan to do FAM and withdrawal/condoms until we're done with kids, at which point DH will have the big snip.  If we have an "oops" then so be it.  I'd rather a bonus child than BCP.

  • No more BCP for me. I tried them for about a year but I had problems remembering to take them- and then I had full on panic attacks that my boyfriend at the time (Now DH) would think I'd intentionally skipped... and on top of the panic attacks my libido vanished totally and I turned into even more of a mood swinging raging b!tch. I went off them and never looked back.

We were a condom couple for 8 or 9 years before TTC. People kept telling us that we'd wind up with an "oops" baby one day using condoms only but the bill I'll be paying up in a couple of days for a full round of infertility testing says differently.

We'll probably go back to condoms when it's absolutely critical that I don't get pregnant (say the first few months postpartum if there's even a libido left after sleepless nights) and take our chances until we're done having kids- at which point he'll probably get a vasectomy.

If only I'd known we were infertile though- condoms suck.
