i think its so dumb when people say "you can't claim a name!!"

i sure as hell can. and i would be petty and bitter if you used it. i would be LIVID if a friend, IRL, used "sawyer" for a girl. bc bottom line - it *isn't* common.

you (general you name stealers) cant think of a different name than one your friend has? really? you love it THAT MUCH? its weird.

My instinct is to feel like this, but like Lori said (I'm sure I'm butchering her words, but I can't read her initial post unless I open a new window and that's too much work) where does it get you?  But, out of curiosity, would you say something to the friend/family member?  Do you think they would change their mind?

From the other side, I'm 100% with you.  I would NEVER feel comfortable using a friend's baby's name, even if I see them once a year.  No matter how much I love the name.

yes. id say "oh really? where'd you get that name?" and roll my eyes. but considering none of my friends know any other girls named sawyer (or aidan for that matter), we'd both know where it came from. so i really dont think any of them would have the ballz to do it ;) but its called common courtesy.

I am totally lerking! But i wanted to say that some one DID steal my DD's name. This girl i have NEVER met, is dating one of my male friends. She is pregnant at the same time i am, about a month further along. I have a party and its at my place. She comes and seems nice, everyone is asking about my daughters name and im showing off the nursery... She hadnt had a name picked out yet... then a few weeks later she tells EVERYONE she is naming her DD Allison... with 2 L's. Mine is with 1. It Pi$$ed me off!! I have never met her and she comes into my home and steals something from me.. (thats what it feels like anyways) Im still not over it honestly.

Ok, this is just crazy. Allison/Alison/Allyson/etc is not an uncommon name at all. I think I could probably name five that I know, off the top of my head. Why on earth would you care if someone that you've only met once happens to be using the same name as you, even if she did get the idea from you? That is just really weird.

As far as the OPs question, I think that it's strange if immediate family or close friends use the same names, unless everyone is cool with it. Past that I don't see the big deal.

My cousin and I had boys a month apart last year and we both named them Charlie. I was a little worried that she would be upset with me, and didn't want to step on her toes (she had mentioned the name during her first pregnancy but didn't use it, and hadn't said anything about it during her second pregnancy yet), so I asked her if she was ok with it. She was, and all is well :)

  • My sister has a 15 yr old daughter named Jayden.  Jayden is super sensitive that her name is quite the boy name now.  Everyone knows it.
Our cousin had a little boy a few years ago and named him Jayden.  My sister was pretty annoyed.  So was my niece.

Awesome.  And yeah, I think it would be quite a stretch for them to claim they got either name anywhere other than your girls.

It's a birth certificate, not a deed. "Dibs!" is a little juvenile if you are old enough to have a child.

Sure, you CAN claim a name. Doesn't mean you don't look delusional for thinking naming a child is a game of freeze tag.
