re: brandy question for teething

i thought this was a forum to ask questions and get help...not to make a person feel badly about asking...

i'm sure you have all been told that our grandparents/parents used brandy on the gums...it was just an innocent question to see if anyone had any success with this.  not to get bashed for wanting to liquor up my children..OF COURSE that would not be my intention.

thanks to those who gave some good advice-I appreciate it!

eh, it was incredibly mild for thebump.  certainly not worthy of a seperate "lets all be friends like oprah and ghandi and love each other and sing kum-by-a" post...

  • Here is an idea....lurk before you post. Any day there are a slew of topics people get flamed for.  A simple browsing of past starred posts would tell you that this is not the board for you.
  • You asked about giving your children alcohol....why would you not be flammed for that?
  • C'mon ladies - she asked a question based on advice given to her by probably her own mother or grandmother.  If my mother were alive, she'd give me the same exact advice.  The OP didn't do it, she asked about it.  She was obviously needing to hear from contemporary moms.

Go ahead and flame me now - I can take it!

But it involves giving alcohol to a baby!!!  How is that even something you would consider?

Yeah, my mother mentioned it to me this morning when I told her how bad D was teething right now.  Not that I am going to do it, but my mother did it and her mother did it.  They didn't have Orajel or teething tablets then.

And Cytina - love the new sig pic.

  • Use Motrin not Tylenol and give the full dose based on weight not age.  This was my pedis advice and it worked like a charm.  GL!
  • Oh and after giving the motrin rub the orajel all over, it will not hurt your children to do this once in a while, they are in pain they need the relief and you need the sanity it seems.

  • I know your intentions were good and you did the right thing by asking. Honestly, that was pretty tame for thebump. It's just that if you take a step back and think logically about it all, you should know that the right solution is not to use brandy.

Think about it this way - there are lots of things our grandparents did (either because society didn't know any better or there was nothing else to use at that point). No carseats for LOs, brandy on the gums, etc. Smoking and drinking during pregnancy, etc.

But now we have better medicine, knowledge, and equipment for LOs. Additionally, your pedi told you that it's safe to use the correct dosage of Motrin over a certain amount of time. So really, brandy is not an option. Try using the correct dosage and that should give them relief. Additionally, consider Hyland's Teething Tablets (though personally I didn't want to use them) or other chewing items for them to alleviate the pain. GL.

  • honestly I think its a good question! Anyone who takes time to talk about their kids on a message board is obviously a pretty good mom and I doubt would try this. But I have always wondered if it works, does brandy numb it at all or is it just to get the child drunk so they dont feel the pain, lol?
