its funny how everyone is worrying about giving their child an "old" sounding name but no one worries about giving their baby a "childish" sounding name and worrying about what people might think when the child grows up. i think evelyn is a strong sounding name, very professional yet pretty.
This is what we are naming our daughter. My great great grandma's name was Evelyn (this isn't why we picked it - we found this out after). Yes I think it sounds old, but that's why I LOVE it. And that's my my daughter is getting it. The only thing about it is that I don't like the nn "evie"... so I'm going to try to eliminate that one right off the bat...

No, I grew up with an Evelyn... she went by "Evie". More traditional names are much more common now. Look at "Emma", for example. Before Rachel named her baby Emma on friends, most of us thought of it as an old lady name.
We are naming our LO Madelyn-- also a traditional name.
It's adorable, we considered it. Funny story, my grandmother's name is Evelyn Maureen. She goes by Maureen instaed of Evelyn. When we told her we considered Evelyn she thought we were crazy because she hates it. To each their own!

LOVE the name! If this LO was a girl, that would be her name Another fav that is similar is Emery- it was typically a boy name in the olden days, but I love it for a girl too
It takes a special amount of bitch to induce menstruation in another person. - LovelyRitaMeterMaid
I LOVE it!! It was one of our girl names we had picked out. I love classic names and I don't think it sounds "old" at all. It's not like Eunice (sorry for all you Eunice's out there). Now THAT is an old name
Names go in and out of style. It seems like names like "Evelyn", "Emma", "Olivia" are coming back in style. "Emma" is the name of a Jane Austen novel from the 18th century. So it has plenty of age and tradition. My grandmother was named "Evelyn" so for me it has a somewhat old connotation. But it doesn't make it pretty.
I love the name "Elizabeth" and it is definitely old and traditional.
Names like Chloe, Zoey, Tiffany, etc. are less traditional in that we can't find examples of them being used prior to recent decades.

I love old names. Evelyn was in our final 2 names, and it's getting pretty popular these days. DH's great-grandma's name is Evelyn, and he is still waffling between Vivienne and Evelyn for our little girl. I'm settled on Vivienne.
I think it does sound "old", but all those names are coming back in style! Our LO will be named Abigail, which is also a classic "old" name... so I don't think having a classic name like that is a reason not to do it!!!

Lol...I know right? That or Henrietta or Bertha (sorry for all you Henrietta and Berthas out there) lol. Thanks.
I'm a bit different on this one then everyone... I do find it "old." I can admit that I'm kind of stereotypical when it comes to this name. At least I'm being honest!
Its my 3 year old niece's name and personally I think it does sound old, however if you use a nickname (SIL is adamant against it) like Eve or Evie I think its cute.
i love evelyn! that's what we're naming baby girl, and she'll go by evie (eve-y). we're using my grandma's name for her middle name - arlene - and i love the way evelyn sounds with it. i didn't realize it was getting so popular! :-)
I think it sounds a little old, but I would shy away from using it just b/c it's getting so popular. I think soon enough it will be up there with Sophia, Olivia, and Emma.
I love the name and was thinking about using it for a middle name. I know and Evelyn who is around 10 years old, and she is the cutest/smartest girl. She goes by Evelyn to her friends, but her mom calls her Evie.
Well, if you look at my ticker - you'll see that I love the name. We did face some resistance with my DH's family because it sounded 'old' and they didn't like it but i think that it's classic and one day will look great on letterhead!
We do call her Evie for short around the house but most everyone else calls her Evelynn. Only thing that annoys me is that we are in the south so it sometimes turns into a two syllable name, Ev-luhn instead of Ev-eh-lynn.
Oh, we added the n and it was almost evelynne b/c that's how my middle name is spelled, Lynne, and my deceased father contributed that part to my name. Thought the e was a little too much so we just added the extra n. This was the debate the day she was born in-between contractions!!
Love the name Evelyn. It is our girl name (pretty sure we are having a boy). I love the nicknames Ev and Evie and also love the full name Evelyn. I know it is becoming more popular right now, but it is still ranked around #60 which isn't too high for us.
We're also about 95% sure we're naming LO Evelyn with nickname "Evie" - I'm a big fan of traditional names (the rest in the running are Abigail, Olivia, Elizabeth, etc) and I think you want to choose a name that will be classic throughout the LO's lifetime.
Re: Does Evelyn sound "old"?
I agree.
I love it. My second favorite band - My Morning Jacket has a great song by that name too, I think that's what makes me like it even more : )

This. Love it but DH did not. I would have called her Evie, if we had gone with the name.
Same here. In fact, he hated it -- "too old-fashioned."
