Success after IF

can we talk bumpers....

ok so i know bumpers are always a hot topic and the general opinion seems to be NO bumpers but i wanted to see what you gals did/are doing...

we just moved LO from cradle to crib....and we went without bumpers BUT about an hour after putting her down she was crying b/c she had gotten her foot somewhat caught b/w the rails.  So....now I'm kind of thinking i would like the bumpers up.

what have you guys done?  no bumpers ever?  bumpers when they got more mobile? waited until older and not as concerned about SIDS?  any input would be appreciated :)

TIA!!!

Re: can we talk bumpers....

  • We used breathable bumpers- they are hideous but they did the job.  Biggest waste of money EVER was the custom crib bedding we had made- we never even used the ridiculously overpriced bumper.  I was too worried about SIDS at the beginning and when that passed, he could use it to climb and get out of the crib.

  • Breathable bumpers....love them!

We moved E to the crib at 6 months and went out and bought them by the end of the first week because she loves to be pressed up against the side of the crib and kept getting an arm stuck.

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • Yup, breathable bumpers.  We went without bumpers until LO got his foot stuck.  They are not pretty, but at least they aren't expensive!

  • We still swaddle her, so she hasn't had an opportunity to bang into the rails or get her foot stuck. I don't think we'll be using the bumpers at all, though. We're at the point now where I'd be worried about her standing on them.

  • I had a bumper, all my friends and family used bumpers and I am not really worried about it being a SIDs risk, since I feel that SIDs has more to do with a brain malfunction then because of bumpers etc.

They do have "breathable" bumpers that people use that are thinner as well.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • We have regular bumpers.  Paige was in our room (pack n play, swing, or our bed) until 6 months.  I didn't move her to her crib until I was confident she was safe.

Now, she uses them as a body pillow!

This is my plan as well.

  • We've used regular bumpers in the crib since dd was born.  I know a lot of people won't do this and I understand it's an area of concern for a lot of parents.  Bumpers are not real high on my worry list so it's never been an issue for us.

This for us as well.  Plus, DS is a complete wild man when he sleeps and I'm more concerned with him smashing is head on the bars and getting his foot caught in between.

  • I'm a stickler for the SIDS prevention guidelines so we've never used a bumper. However, H is really mobile in the crib now and getting his leg caught between the rails a lot, so we may add a breathable one soon.

    Mine too. :)

  • I had no bumpers until she started getting stuck in the slats.  Now we have a breathable bumper and it does its job.

  • I never used one and he got over the phase quickly where his foot would get stuck. It maybe lasted a week or two.

  • breathable bumpers since day 1 (and she STILL manages to get her legs caught between the slats!)

I would never use a standard "old school" bumper. I would find ginny smashed up against the sides all the time. the risk of suffocation was WAY too high for my comfort level.

  • I never bought or used one. I thought about the breathable one, but DD was swaddled until almost 6 months, and then she slept in a sleep sack, so never got anything stuck in the rails. Now she's older, she can get herself out if she does, so it's not an issue.

  • M&D were in our room for the first several months (largely bedsharing at various points throughout the night but never together.)  when we moved them to their cribs they both had standard bumpers which were great, we were not worried about them particularly.  one day i found daphne sleeping with her face IN the corner of the crib, smashed against two bumper panels.  it made me nervous so we switched to breathable bumpers, but honestly she was probably fine with the old ones.  now we have the breathables from BRU and they work as far as the crib slat issue but both babies have gotten bumps and bruises - i think they were just used to being able to throw themselves around like they were in a padded room lol ;)

  • We use breathable, but they still get their legs under it and in the slats.  I am thinking no bumper at all would have been better.  Or maybe I just need to pull the breathable one down more...

This. We didn't move L to her crib until 6 months, but we used a bumper as soon as we moved her.  She is wild when she sleeps and needs the padding.

  • we also used the breathable bumpers.

      this is my plan!
  • My son is 2 and we have never used bumpers. He went through a period of time where his leg would get stuck and I would just get up and free his leg. It sucked for a bit, but eventually his legs stopped getting stuck. We tried the breathable one and it didn't fit our crib right and he just wanted to play with it so we returned it.
  • We use (and always have used) the cutesy bumpers that came with our bedding set.  DS slept in a crib without bumpers once and wedged his head so hard in a corner that it bruised.  Breathable bumpers wouldn't have prevented it.

On the list of big bad baby things to be afraid of, bumpers just don't rank very high for me.
