Babies: 9 - 12 Months

any almost 10monthers still not self-feeding?

DS still just throws food on the floor that he picks up.  He will eat any table/finger foods we feed him though.  Pedi said average age to self feed is 9-12 months, so I'm not worried.  It just seems like every baby on here already self feeds!!!

  • I'm in the same boat.  Gianna will only feed herself puffs, yogurt melts and cheerios.  It's frustrating.  She won't eat veggies or fruit.  Sometimes she will eat some meat, but rarely.

  • I can't even get C to feed himself those!  He almost fed himself a puff once and I screamed yay and scared him and he dropped it lol.  I guess he is just reminding me that he is the boss and will do things when he's ready!!!
  • I think it also depends on when you started solids to begin with. And, of course, some babies just aren't ready!

It's easy to feel like yours is the only baby that doesn't x, when lots of others do - like, STTN, crawling, babbling, etc.

  • My LO won't take a sippy on his own-we've been trying for 3 months!  He'll feed himself finger foods BUT only if they are given to him one by one.  If he has a whole tray he sweeps his hand across the tray, squishes everything into his hands, then starts flailing his arms around.  Then the food hits the floor and the dog gets a nice little treat.

hmm maybe I'll try handing them to him and see what happens.  I generally just leave a few on his tray.

  • My DD has yet to self-feed herself anything.  She just wants to play with the food and throw it around, and has no desire to put it anywhere near her mouth.  We also introduced purees at 4 months, but she didn't actually start eating them until close to 7 months. It's so frustrating!  I think we are set to have a difficult eater for life Sad
  • DS will grab fist-fulls of whatever I put on his tray but does not put them in his mouth.  He does great with a sippy cup and can hold his own bottle.  He will open his mouth and eat whatever table food I give him!  He has just recently become extremely interested in the food that we are eating...so much so that he whines a little until we give him some!
