Which is more EF?

We desperately need to replace the rusted out yard shed we have. It's a nasty old metal one. We're hoping to replace it when we get our tax refund (no idea how much it will be just yet). So DH & I are trying to decide what style we want.

The large Rubbermaid (can you say PLASTIC), that will last forever.

or

Wood...which will require painting & more up-keep?

(For as much as I HATE buying a huge piece of plastic, it just seems easier and seems like it will last us longer (ugh...and the environment, too).

And, just as a FWIW - it will house the lawnmower & other lawn & pool supplies.

  • Wood :)

    Plastics are my enemy :)

My grandpa has a wooden barn (no nails! pegs!) that isn't even maintained well and is over 100 yrs old.

I think wood will last as long as you'll need it, especially with a little care :)

  • I think I would probably go with the plastic in that case.  As you said wood requires painting or staining every few years which I think is less EF.  Could you look for one on Craig's List?  Then you wouldn't feel as bad about buying plastic.

  • I don't know which is more EF, but the thought of being inside an unventilated plastic box in the heat of the summer with lawnmower gasoline, chlorine, etc., doesn't sound like fun. At least a wooden one would better ventilated.

  • I say wood.  It would give my DH a project to build and that makes him happy. lol

  • Wood.

Sure, the plastic tool shed will last a long time, but not "forever."  They're finding now that heat/light breakdown causes even the "indestructible" plastics to break down.  Especially things like window vinyl and door casings.

Also, eventually that shed will outlive its usefulness (either with you or future tenets), and be destroyed.

Not to mention that with the heat/light breakdown there will be some off-gassing, which, again, mixed with gasoline and chlorine doesn't sound like a healthy experience.

You can use reclaimed wood to make it even more EF.

Use barn paint, it will prime & seal at once and last a long time.

  • Thanks!  All very good points!  We'll definitely be looking at Craiglist regardless of what we end up with.
