I know, I know, I've been talking about my cloth diapering switch for the last 2 days, but I'm so excited about it! I have 32 bamboo wipes and folded them so they'd pop up out of the Huggies box like normal wipes. Then I mixed a solution of 2 cups warm water, 2 tbsp baby wash, and 2 tbsp olive oil (I've heard tea tree oil rocks, but didn't have any this time). I put the folded wipes in the box and shook over the sink, then flipped the "brick" of wipes over. Shazam--wet wipes for a day of diapering tomorrow!
Oh, and we had our first "poop" experience this evening. Funny how I was sitting around scared/excited for poop--like I wasn't sure how it would go the first time shaking/scraping poop off into the toilet out of the diaper. Lucky for me, it was easy.
Thanks for indulging me in talking about my successes. DH is starting to look at me like I'm nuts and have way too much time on my hands.
Re: I just made my own wipes!
FWIW, my first batch looked really soapy. I'm definitely cutting down on the soap when those run out. I'll probably keep a wet cloth on hand to wipe off the soap. Definitely not feeling that, either. I'm trying to clear up Samuel's pesky butt rash over here, not create new problems for myself!
Abi--it's kind of grown out of necessity. Samuel has extremely sensitive skin and for the past few months (yeah, months), he's had an almost raw butt rash. We've tried everything and finally someone suggested that perhaps he's having an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the diapers. Why that hadn't happened before, I don't know, but it's happening now. His little butt was as clear as it's been in months when I got him up this morning after spending his first evening in cloth. Amazing.
Plus, I'm trying to bargain my way into a minivan over here. We are packing all four of us into my Ford Focus as our family vehicle right now and it SUCKS. I've been trying to look for ways to cut money out of our budget so I can justify it to DH. So far, so good. He's taking note and hearing what I have to say......
I am hoping to switch DS over soon too! I am still researching which types and brands I want to get. My DS also has very sensitive skin and I'm glad to hear that your little guy is healing now from the new diapers. Yea! What kind did you go with?
I have a few friends who CD and make their own wipes but I am pretty sure they don't use soap. I think they mix water, tea tree oil (which I know you mentioned not having on hand), and lavender oil (or any other pure essential oil if you want a different scent). It seems like a pain to have to remember an extra wet washcloth for each change in order to get the soap off.
Congrats on your new, fun project
We have several kinds of things over here right now. I'll keep posting as to which ones are working out best for us, but here's what I've tried so far:
Bum Genius 3.0 One Size Pocket Diapers (I have 2). They are wonderful, but expensive. I've found that you can actually pull the insert out instead of changing the whole diaper each time if it's just pee. Poop could mean a whole different story.
"Flip" Diaper Cover (it's just like the Bum Genius, just without the pocket, so you can wipe it out between changes and change the insert). I put a chinese prefold inside of the cover instead of the more expensive inserts. Works great!
Dancing Bears Nighttime Weight Fleece Soaker (fits over chinese prefolds and anything you want to stuff the prefold with--works AWESOME! Seriously would hold back the Niagara.)
I have Thirsties Duo Wraps and Bummis Whisper Wraps on order. I'll let you know how I like those, too.
