Pumping to build my supply back up....help!

I feel so clueless! I had to start supplementing because my daughter was not gaining enough weight but her doc is now happy with her weight gain so I would like to go back to just BF. Well my milk supply sucks right now! A few days ago I got 2oz pumping, now I get anywhere from a half an oz to 1oz which is obviously not enough. So my questions are:

-When is the best time to pump, right after nursing or between feedings?
-How long do I pump, do I continue even if I'm not getting anymore?
-How often should I pump?

Any other advice? For a while she had a rough time nursing so I gave up a few times but she's doing better again. I'm calling a lactation consultant tomorrow but wanted to check with you ladies too. I just really want to continue BF!

Thanks and sorry its so long!

Re: Pumping to build my supply back up....help!

  • Good questions! I am in a similar scenario....I hope there is someone out there in Bumpland that can give us some tips!

  • I pumped after feedings for an additional 5-10 minutes.  You will not get anything but it's important to do it every feeding.  You're not pumping to get anything, you're pumping for the stimulation to get your supply up.  Be sure you're drinking enough and that you're eating plenty of protein, fat, and calories.
  • If your LO is only eating from one side I would pump from the other at the same time.  I use the my breast friend to help keep DD in a good position and I rigged a bra to hold my pump.  My LO recently started sometimes sleeping through her middle of the night feeding so I feed and pump at the same time during the next feeding to help keep my supply up in both breasts or otherwise my one breast would be missing two feedings. Then, if I were you, I would pump the side she ate from just for the stimulation.

Thank you so much! I do need to improve my diet so hopefully that will improve it too!

If you've got supply issues, let LO feed from both sides for 15-20 min each feeding

thanks for the advice.  My supply is too good causing a lovely hindmilk imbalance so that is why I am feeding from one side but I got worried I would be all screwed up If I did not pump when she misses a feeding since at that point she would be missing two from one side.  I have to let her feed till my breast is empty or she gets terrible green diapers. • My pedi told me that the color of the bowel movements don't matter in a BF baby.  I was concerned because it seemed like DS was having more green diapers than yellow and he told me that is not a concern at all.  He is gaining weight appropriately, so I don't know if that makes a difference at all.
