Infertility

HSG ? with a side of TMI

I feel kind of stupid asking this. I have a call into my doc just to make sure everything is kosher but I wanted opinions from others while I wait.

I had my HSG Friday afternoon. It was extremely painful, even with Tylenol 3. My doc said everything was all clear, no blockages and no abnormalities. I kept having severe cramps through Friday night to the point that I took another pain killer to sleep. I was having very very light spotting Friday and Saturday. Saturday the cramps were there but were more like dull period cramps. Had sex yesterday afternoon and started cramping more during and after it. This morning I woke up to severe cramps and bleeding. I am only bleeding when I use the bathroom. So far I don't need a pad or panty-liner at all but there is a lot of blood when I do use the bathroom. It is bright red and has lots of clots, so it isn't old.

This is were I feel really stupid...I'm not sure if this is normal or not. My last u/s was 3 weeks ago and the doc said it looked like I had a few small blood clots on my lining. Could those have been dislodged by the HSG and that is what all of this bleeding/clotting is? Could the sex have just irritated everything too much? Has anyone else had this kind of bleeding after an HSG? I'm kind of freaked out by it.

Re: HSG ? with a side of TMI

  • I had one and experienced a lot of pain from it too. I didn't have the constant cramps though, or bleeding. I would definitely call your doctor. I have a friend who had one and it knocked out her blockage and she got pregnant within a month. So, your theory may be right. It may have knocked your blood clots out of their hiding place, but I'm not a doctor, and you should definitely get it checked out. GL!

  • I don't know much about the HSG but I suppose it could happen.  Plus with the extra cramping (contracting uterus) it certainly seems possible to "knock a few loose." As for the pain, yikes, I'm so sorry!  I'll be scheduling one soon and my dr already prescribed vicodin AND motrin for the procedure and after.   I'm so glad your results were clear and that's one less thing to worry about!
  • Thanks everyone. I left a message with her after hours service a couple of hours ago and she hasn't called back yet. She's usually pretty good about calling right away if she thinks it's an emergency so I'm guessing she isn't too worried about it. As of right now, the cramping has stopped, I'm still bleeding but it is much lighter than it was. I'm hoping it stops all together very soon.

No matter what her track record is, it's INEXCUSABLE for a doctor to take this long to call back.

She may not have gotten the call. To have cramps and bleeding/clots this many days post HSG is not normal, and warrants an immediate call back, regardless of whether or not it's an emergency.

    Call the service again.

You're absolutely right. I think I'm just hoping that it really isn't anything to be worried about. I'm calling now, thanks.

It most likely isn't anything to worry about - but it still isn't typical and requires some sort of response on her part.

    hope you feel better soon.
