Evening Primrose Oil and Mucus Plug question

I have used EPO vaginally for the past 2 nights.  Last night I woke up to use the bathroom and when i wiped, I had 2 off-white, dime-sized chunks of what looked like thick snot.

Could this be remnants of the EPO coming out or pieces of my mucus plug?

Re: Evening Primrose Oil and Mucus Plug question

  • That is a tough one.  I haven't lost my mp yet (at least I don't think I have?).  But I have been using EPO since week 34.  I find that I have increased discharge/EPO from using it.

  • Why are you trying induction techniques so early?

And honestly? It doesn't matter if it was your MP or not. The MP can regenerate and losing it doesn't mean you're going to go into labor any time soon.

  • It is not a induction technique.  You can read about it here

  • Butting in...

I'm a labor nurse. I agree with the previous poster that the MP really means nothing for most people. People call all day losing their mucus plugs and it really doesn't matter.

On an aside, I would be extremely careful with Evening primrose oil. While midwives (mostly lay midwifes, i.e. not Nurse Midwives) will tell you it is "ok" or "safe" to use as an induction method, I have personally witnessed on more than one occasion a patient come in who has used it who is in an EXTREMELY aggressive contraction pattern where the fetus is not getting enough breaks between contractions.

Compare labor for your baby to dunking his head under water every 2 minutes, with a contraction your cutting down his oxygen flow. So when EPO is used and it has this tetanic contraction effect the baby does not do well. More than 1 stat c-section straight from triage for this oil.

Personally if I need some help kicking labor in I would stick to...

    1.walking (LOTS AND LOTS)

    2.sex (LOTS and LOTS) :)

Nothing will induce labor if your body isn't ready. But what exactly do you think you're doing if you're trying to soften your cervix- which is exactly what EPO does.
