Lady Grooming Now/Delivery

HELP! I haven't seen much about this topic and I am dying to know about what you are doing for your lady grooming. With my big, giant belly, I cannot see anything down there! Therefore, grooming has not been all that possible. DH is scared of cutting me. Sometimes I use a razor and other times I get waxed. I have been extremely hesitant about waxing because it can cause contractions and I know I am a lot more senstive to everything right now and I don't know if I could handle the pain. When I went into L&D I was so embarassed (not that they care in the least) because I was running wild down there! For my own sake, I want to feel clean, groomed, and not like a jungle! What are you doing? How? Suggestions needed! ;)

Re: Lady Grooming Now/Delivery

  • I had a c-section the first time around and well couldn't groom myself either. They actually shaved me some before going into surgery. I think they are pretty used to it considering how big our bellies get. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Someone who recently had a baby suggested Veet to me. I think they have that one you put on and wipe off with a sponge--- you could prob do it in front of the mirror so you can see if you miss anything. Way less painful than waxing too.
  • Ya, it just kind of sucks. I remember reading a lot of these posts when I was pregnant the first time, and most ladies just said they stopped caring at a point. I used to get waxed religiously, but refuse to do it pregnant, so it kind of is what it is. I trim with small scissors by holding a mirror or just guessing (I've gotten good at it), but it's not perfect. It's better than doing nothing, but I refuse to shave/wax right now. I'm having a c-section though, so my experience will be a bit different than some :)

Everyone says you don't care when the time comes, it's the last thing you're thinking about. I think I'd probably care personally, and my best friend said she regretted not getting waxed. But it's also a PITA!

  • A small mirror is your friend. But dont worry about a bikini line or anything. Forget waxing, it hurts sooooo bad. Shaving is hard to do in the mirror but trimming the hedge a bit with scissors would not be harmful. (I say hedge because I am very bushy naturally)

Some of the stuff I have read actually suggests you stop with the "grooming" to close down there as you get closer because it can make the skin even more sensitive.

  • I've been trying to keep up maintenance, but this last time I used a lady shaver and a mirror...bahahaha....it was like a botched hair cut (still long in places, and super short in others)!  DH said he'd help, but for some reason that seems weird to me, lol.  I think I may just say eff this and go as is until I can see down there again.  Like you said, L&D couldn't care less about that.

If you do this, make sure it's made for bikini area...I made that mistake once, long ago...I actually got chemical burns from it :(  But that's not a bad idea...I may have to look into it more.

  • Last time I just went by feel with the razor.  You just have to remember to keep the skin and folds pulled tight.  Make sure you've been in the shower for a few minutes to help soften the hairs.
  • I don't care all that much right now about maintaining a nice bikini line, haha.

That said, I do 'borrow' DH's beard trimmer and keep things trimmed that way. (Just don't tell him!) It's like a small electric hair-clipper, with the plastic guard to set the length you want, so I don't have any risk of cutting myself even if I can't see anything!

  • The make fogless shower mirrors that attach to tile with suction cups. I think they sell them at Walmart and places like that, but this will give you an idea.
I thought about about having my SO do it for me.. but that seems kind of counterproductive, since he's the only reason I bother anymore. Stick out tongue

  • So far I have been able to make it work with a hand mirror and bikini razor/trimmer. I sit on the edge of the bathtub to do it so that I can see and stay balanced. Granted, it does not happen as often as it did prepregnancy, but I refuse to let it get too wild either.

  • I have DH help me out.  I'm not super concerned with what I look like--but I know from last time around that it's so much easier to keep things clean/dry and healing good when everything is trimmed up.

I would not put Veet or any other hair removal cream anywhere near my vajajay

  • Just remember what it feels like when a wax grows back and add possible PP recovery pains to that.

Personally, I am not doing anything.  Hair is not "dirty" and should be the last thing on your care providers mind if they are any good.

  • Since hitting 30 weeks, I can't even manage to reach down there very well when it comes to using the bathroom...MUCH LESS GROOMING!!

I'm jealous of the ladies that can.

I wouldn't use veet or nair while pregnant, the jury is still out on what these can do while pregnant. Plus, your skin is so sensitive during this time that there's no way for you to know if you're going to have a reaction of some sort or get a chemical burn.

This is what I've been doing.  I know sometimes there are patches I can't really get to, but overall its not bad down there.

this. last time I just gave up but I felt gross enough down there afterwards with the stitches and bleeding. I kind of want to be groomed to at least avoid unnecessary ickiness.

  • It looks like even though Veet is not suggested for the bikini line, I know people that use it for that purpose and either use the sensitive skin kind, but make sure you leave it on for the amount of time listed, no longer.
  • lurking but been there done that and I get it! So I'm a hairdresser and do the "clipper over comb" technique. lol! Your husband can do this for you and not be afraid of cutting you. Take clippers or beard trimmers. Take the comb and comb it in underneath your hair so that it lays sideways against your skin so that the ends of your hair hang over the top. take clippers/trimmers or scissors and trim above the comb. this way you get close without being afraid of any snags. hope that makes sense. Happy Trimming!

  • All great ideas and glad I am not alone! Thanks ladies! I have to say, I am too afraid of the hair removal lotions altogether, even when I am not pg. I will see what I can accomplish with a mirror and then just beg DH! ;) Although, I know it's not "dirty", it just feels so much cleaner when everything is trimmed up!

  • I kept up my monthly brazilian waxes up until about 6.5 months pregnant. Went 8 weeks between appointments and decided to just shave it. I couldn't see over the belly, but I was able to go from memory and still do a nice, clean shave. I don't have one of these but I have heard that a fog-free hand mirror is really helpful in the shower. Or the Schick Lady Razor that has a trimmer on the end is good too!

When I had DD, I had a c-section and right before the wheeled me back, a nurse came in with trimmers. She lifted my blanket and said "Oh wow, you're already all shaved! Did you do this yourself?! If you did, nice job!" haha!

  • I have had two c-sections, the first one I was not really "groomed" and later regretted it! The second by far was better and less messy as I was groomed (Not shaved, but short, lol). This might be TMI, but I found when I wasn't groomed my hairs stuck together and was very painful to wipe sometimes (especially if your not planning on anything being stuck together, lol)
  • .Im going to be a single mom so i have no one to ask really. ( my mother volunteered to shave me, creepy but sweet right?) So i just do my best, every week and half to two weeks i shave. I just use feeling to navigate. And when i think ive got it i pull out my hand held mirror and check. Its time consuming but im afraid to have a bunch of hair. I wish i had the balls to wax.

  • At 35 weeks I went for a bikini wax.  BAD IDEA. Well, the lady went a little nuts and it ended up being more of a brazilian with nothing but a landing strip left, which at the time I was fine with her going the "extra mile".  However, 2 hours later I was in L&D with contractions and severe back pain, nurses thought it was possibly caused by me tensing up.  Luckily the contractions subsided, but I've happily neglected the area since :) To hell with it......

  • DH bought me a lady trimmer and until about a month ago, I was doing just fine on my own. He helped me out last time, and I'll have him help me again before I go in for my c-section on December 9.

  • When I went in for my section, I just shaved it all.  Everything.  You don't need to SEE it to do it.  Just be super careful.  Until then, tho, I went wild.  DH never said if he minded or not, but I do NOT care.  LOL  Right now, I use a trimmer to keep it decent, at least.  But I will shave completely when the time is near.  It's just easier.  And if you DO have a section, they shave everything, incl your belly.  Creepy and weird.  So, I just did it all to avoid anyone touching me with a razor.

  • I use the trimmer side of a "Schick Quattro for women trimstyle razor and bikini trimmer".  I was worried that if I shaved it all (or convinced DH to do so) I'd have to deal with bumps or rash.  This way I'm comfortable and I'm not worried that I'll hurt myself since I cant see what I'm doing!

  • I still am able to shave, I haven't had a problem yet, though I can't see, I trust myself.  I wasn't as groomed when I had DS, but when they went to prep me for my c/s they went to shave and I remember the nurse saying "Well we don't need to shave anything" which thank god, because they were going to do it dry.  Ingrown hairs and a c/s to heal...no thank you. But have you tried to use a mirror? I haven't heard waxing cause contractions, but it is deff. more sensitive than normally would be.

  • With my daughter I just waited until I was about 2 weeks away from my due date and went to get a brazilian it was perfect since I was a week early!

This time around I'll do the same.  I don't care what I look like now and I quit trying to shave so I'll just wait til i'm about 2 weeks away from my due date and just go get it ALL removed! IMO it's easier to clean and take care of after labor anyway.

  • I get sugared (another form of waxing, organic) every 5 weeks and its actually less painful being pregnant than before! I cant see down there and its nice to just have it done and not have to worry! Little worried my timing will be off for actual arrival but thats ok! The hair grows back few and far between :)

  • This is one project i plan on tackling this weekend!!!!! I really couldn't care less about what the docs and stuff think during delivery, but after if you are all bushy it felt pretty gross to me having the pads and the cleanup and stuff with the hair was more of a pain and just made me feel like I was soooo not clean...after i "took care of that" the last time i felt MUCH better!!!

  • I have never gone for a full wax down there in my life. I've always been weirded out by the idea of going bald. But I do like to keep things neat. Last night I actually waxed my bikini line- interesting since I couldn't see as well as usual. I used a mirror and the Nads 'strips' and desensitizing wipes for my bikini line. Then I just use an electric trimmer to keep the other length short. This really feels like TMI, but it wasn't that hard to do with a mirror. I will probably only do this one more time in this pregnancy since I don't think it matters too much. Maybe if I were getting more sex these days I would care more?

  • I have a little round mirror that sits on a stand. I position it on the back of the toilet and use a hair/ beard clipper to trim up. I just straddle the toilet and it catches all the hair!

  • I've been getting waxed - it does hurt more, but if I take a Tylenol an hour to half hour before, it helps. Learned that trick from when I had braces lol. Plus my tech goes super fast so I don't have time to sit there and think about it!

  • i got a brazilian about 4 weeks before my due date, but i get them regularly and wasn't worried about tensing up, contractions, etc.
