XP: What should I pack for DH's surprise "labor bag"?

I'm putting together a little "goody bag" for DH for when we go to the hospital.  I'm buying him a Diaper Dude bag and I'll stuff it full of useful stuff that he can have with him while I'm in labor and the next day in the hospital (I'm packing it now and I'll surprise him with it on our way in to L&D)... I'm just trying to figure out what to pack... any of you ladies have ideas of what to add?  Here's what I've thought of so far:- Gum, mints, candy, granola bars, snacks, etc.- Sleep mask, maybe a little neck pillow or earplugs?- Sports Illustrated- A handheld massager (so his hands don't get sore while rubbing my back while I'm in labor!) - Puzzle books (he likes Sudoku-type games)- Playing cards - A new pair of pajama pants and a new undershirt, maybe a new pair of flip flops- Should I pack something he can take to help him sleep, like Benadryl or Simply Sleep?  Or something to keep him awake, like Red Bull or Jolt? I'm sure he'll bring his iPod on his own, and he'll know I'm up to something if I try to pack it for him. Smile Thanks ladies!

  • How about a disposable camera, so he can take some candid shots of you guys during and after labor?

  • i had a bag for DH... all he got out of it was gum, sour worms. Nothing else was useful (I sent him home at night to sleep).  If I had it to do over again, I'd still have him an extra pair of clothes (in case you puke on him or something) and I would pack a PB&J sandwich and drinks (water or sodas) that he would not have to leave the room for. I'd put the sandwich in a bag that made minimal noise to get it out.  I had no epidural... apparently when you're in that much pain, noises really really aggravate you and your DH leaving you to get something to eat it unheard of. But that's my experience.  GL.

I'm gonna pack our digital camera, baby book, anything "important" that he's already been told by his daddy friends not to forget.  I want this to be little things special for him to help him be more comfortable while I'm in labor...

  • I would also add some dollar bills in case he wants to grab a coke and the cafe is closed. Also pack snacks, I wish I would have had more. By the time I had my son and was back in the room it was almost 7pm and the hospitial cafe was closing. We almost had nothing to eat.

If he is going to spend the night with you maybe pack his pillow if you think he would care about that kind of thing. Also if you do not live close to home and he will need to shower there maybe add his mini shampoo, hairbrush, other stuff like that.

  • If he's spending the night, I'd recommend a pillow and blanket.  All DH had to sleep on was a stiff recliner, and he didn't have either.  I let him borrow a blanket off of my bed, and let him use the pillow I packed for myself.  I felt so bad for him-he was so uncomfortable!
  • I packed my husband a bag, the only thing he actually used from it was his pajamas. My labor was so short he didn't need snacks or entertainment and afterwards he was so focused on me and our LO that he forgot about things like eating haha

DH used absolutely nothing I packed for him. He's a really low maintenance kind of guy though. I think what you have so far is good. You're going to have so much stuff to take home with you.

  • Extra clothes, snacks, and bottles of water.  I packed the individual packs of pretzels, goldfish, etc.  I packed a bag full of stuff for him and to be honest the only use he got out of it was the food and beverages, but I was in the hospital less then 24 hours.  One thing I forgot to pack for myself and would definitely recommend is chapstick!  Your lips get so dry!

  • Earplugs?!?!  Huh?  I guess I'm used to DH getting up with me for baby.  I never would be kind enough to let him off the hook like that.  You are a heck of a wife to let the guy have earplugs at any point during or after labor.  Wow.  Don't talk to my DH!
