So I'm getting into the groove of things with breastfeeding but ive definitely got a few questions.
First - my nipples feel bruised and battered! The first minute or two when he latches feel like some sort of torture! Normal since I'm still a newbie? He does tend to suck in his bottom lip but the LC at the hospital showed me how to work on retraining & fixing that. His latch is usually fine from what I can tell - it's just those first few sucks that make my toes curl!
Also - LO has regular mustardy bowel movements but they sometimes are rePly stinky! I've only ever heard that BF babies don't have stinky dipes - could it be what Im eating? I haven't changed my diet, but I did. Notice some irritation on his poor bum when a friend brought us enchiladas with salsa all over them. Another neighbor brought lasagna that was LOADED with garlic so I am wondering if that could be the culprit. :-/
for now, I think that's it... Thanks ladies!
Re: New mama questions....
My nipples hurt like that in the beginning too. The LC's kept telling me that I must be doing it wrong, because it's not supposed to hurt...well duh, you're tugging on something that never had that done before, of course it's going to hurt. Your LO's still learning, so it will be a while before it stops hurting...I think it hurt for the first two months for me. And whoever told you BF poo doesn't stink is a BIG FAT LIAR. It stinks to high heaven!
Pain for the first few sucks is normal at the beginning and doesn't mean your latch is bad. That pain will go away.
I'm betting the culprit in both the enchiladas and the lasagna is actually the tomato (salsa and sauce) - I've heard that can bother some BF babies.
To me BF poop is smelly but sweet-smelly. I definitely gag a little when I change the diaper pail. I think that's just a matter of perception and what you think is stinky.
For me, the nip pain lasted the first six weeks, even with a good latch checked by several LCs. It does get better, though!
As far as poo -- I guess it depends on your nose. I think BF baby poo hardly smells at all, especially compared to my toddler's diapers.

Breastfed babies poop does smell it just doesn't smell at all as bad as formula poop or toddler poop. - Nasty!
My nipples KILLED the first 2 weeks. I was really awful. I almost called it quits a few times because I was in so much pain. Eventually it went away and breastfeeding is a breeze now. I actually really enjoy it even though before I had LO I never thought I would.
And his diapers (and poots) can be really smelly. Sometimes more than others but they all have a little funk to them.
