How these kids don't use condoms. I was watching Leah's story last night and she said she stopped getting her birth control shots and that's how she got pregnant.
Why aren't they using condoms? There are far worse things that can happen from unprotected sex than pregnancy. What about incurable diseases such as AIDS or herpes? Why aren't they concerned about that?
I got HPV in college from a one night stand, and had to have a LEEP to get rid of the cells. It was horrible. We had used a condom but were too drunk to realize it had slipped off until the next morning. Sorry for the TMI.
I plan to tell my DS and any other future children about my story, to warn them that STDs do happen and not to only worry about pregnancy when having sex.
Re: You know what really concerns me about 16 & Pregnant?
Agreed. It freaks me out so much. And how they're just like "oops!" and laugh about it with their friends (like on Leah's epi). It's like REALLY????
And what gets me more is how irresponsible most of the guys are and that they really don't care. Like that one guy this season who texted the mom something like, "give me the papers so i can sign over that mistake" talking about waiving his parental rights. It just breaks my heart in so many ways and concerns me about our society's next generation. If they're so frivalous about these things what will they be serious about?
Although I get where you are coming from, not all guys are like the guys on this show.
I blame it on the abstinence only campaigns, where schools only get funding if they do NOT educate about safe sex.
How stupid can you get? Kids are going to have sex, period. At least some of them will. So teaching them that the only way to protect yourself is to wait until marriage is sticking your head in the sand.
They dont use condoms because either they got very little education about them (ie: they got abstinence only education) or they are just stupid teenagers who have a "nothing can happen to ME" mentality. The kids featured on the show also tend to be in what I would classify as abusive relationships (verbally, emotionally) and have parents who are either uninvolved or have not demonstrated healthy, loving relationships to their kids. Most of the parents of the teen parents also had their kids very young and outside of marriage and they cycle is just perpetuating.
And honestly, I wouldnt tell your kids your story....like that. Not only is it TMI for your children (who wants to hear about their mom having a drunk one-night stand?? EW), but all it does is show that even if you DO use a condom, they dont always work right. It's a better "dont drink in excess" story than anything.
I totally agree with not telling your kids your story like that...and maybe if you had an STD that wasn't something that 85% of people have it would have more impact.. Honestly my OB told me that many people have or have had HPV in their lifetime. Pretty much the people that are virgins before they marry are the only ones that don't get it. It's that common.
I wish they would show more 16 & pregnant where the teens choose adoption.. they seem to find the most shocking hillbillies to showcase. Though it's for TV so they've got to have drama.
I heard that too...I couldn't believe my ears. I hope a producer told her to say that so it would start a conversation.
my other pet peeve about the show is the don't seem to follow any SIDS recommendations. I may be super paranoid...but they seem to think their babies are as invincible as they are.
Thanks! I just responded.
Obviously I would not tell them the gory details of how I got HPV. But I do think I will tell them when they are much older how risky sex can be.
DEFINITELY.
Tritto. Abstinence only ed is the most ridiculous thing ever federally funded. Except, maybe, NCLB
when i was 14 and my mom was 40 and had a m/c, i did NOT appreciate her telling me that this shows no form of BC is 100%. i wanted to barf for weeks.
I really really hope not. I'm not around a lot, or any kids that age right now. So all the experience I have is from what I see on the show. It just seems like with how many stories they have on the show- 90% of the guys are jreks! That's bad...... arg.
Uh oh- it says there is no reply! Maybe the system is slow in getting it to me
I so, so, so, SOOOO agree.
Hmmm, I wasn't a virgin when I got married and I never had HPV. I had sex with someone else before I met DH and we used condoms the correct way 100% of the time.
I know you're just making a point, but your OB is using gross over-generalizations and frankly is insulting those of us who actually made informed decisions.
This last episode with Leah is the only one I remember there being any blatant "I regret this" post-show confessional. She was pretty clear that she would give anything to go back and not make the mistake she did.
You're right - they make it look a little too "ok".
You can get HPV even if a condom is used correctly. Trust me, I know.
I'm sure that's true, but having sex before marriage doesn't ALWAYS mean you'll get HPV, as the pp's OB seemed to suggest. kwim?
PS. That blows. I mean, you do everything you know to protect yourself (other than abstain) and you still end up with something. Not fair.
This is my biggest problem. Though there are a lot of smart 15/16 year old girls out there, there are plenty who are immature enough to almost think getting pregnant would make them cool in a way. They might even end up on MTV.
someone could have it and not know. your body could resolve it on its own before an abnormal pap.

"Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems from it. In 90% of cases, the body?s immune system clears HPV naturally within two years."
