What's The Protocol If You Think You Might Be Leaking Fluid?

I stood up to walk into the kitchen a bit ago and felt a definite leak even though I had just gone to the bathroom.  I haven't had a bladder control problem this entire pregnancy so it was unusual enough to catch my attention.  I've also been having some on and off back pains since I woke up this morning.  I changed my underwear and put in a pantyliner.  How long should I pay attention to it and what should I keep an eye out for?  I am over 38 weeks so it's not like I need to panic if I am leaking and I don't want to call the doc until I am sure that something is going on.  Thanks!

  • If its your water it will continue to leak, you won't be able to stop it! Good Luck!

  • Lie down for 30 minutes.  If you feel a gush when you stand up, it's probably your water.

When it doubt, check it out (with the OB). lol  Sorry, had to rhyme.

  • My ob told me to call when my water starts leaking.  It can't hurt to call. Good luck!
  • If you soak the panty liner it's likely your water. I'd personally would want to be sure it wasn't discharge before calling and an hour of waiting isn't going to hurt anything.

  • Call your doc. Good luck!

  • Our childbirth class teacher said that if you have even the slightest hunch that your water has broken, it has broken.  :-)  Proceed as if, based on what you have planned with your MW/OB.  Good luck!
  • I thought I was leaking last week, when I went to the OB she ran a ph test and it came back negative so it was not fluid but in fact urine or could have also been semen (TMI, sorry!) b/c my hubby and I had sex within 24 hrs of the test.  She also said sometimes you will have  a small tear to the water bag so a slow leak will happen, instead of a gush.

    Good luck

  • put a pad/liner on to see if it get soaks.

If you really think it did - go to your OB  - they can do a PH test to see if it's really your water.

I've gone two times (w/previous pregancies) conviced that my water was leaking and had the PH test done - luckily both times I was fine and I felt silly - but my doc office was nice and said it's always good to check since you don't to risk an infection.

GL - hope you are just fine :-)
