baby sleep in a laundry basket

i was talking to a friend from back home about my excitement about how my boyfriend and i picked up our crib and dresser last night at the store. she was telling me how wrong i was for wasting money on a crib when a baby doesnt need one. shes pregnant herself (only 13 weeks along) and she told me how she is just going to use a laundry basket with a blanket at the bottom until the baby is old enough to sleep in her bed with her. is it just me or is anyone else having the thoughts of "what the fu@k!" i told her how i felt about her plan to use a laundry basket and she didnt like what i had to say meanwhile i sat and listened to her *** to me about how i wasted money on a crib and dresser. ugh.

  • What? Wow - but they sleep in a crib for a year or so...I can see using a basket instead of an expensive bassinet for the first few weeks if you want to keep the baby in your room rather than in his/her room in the big crib. But to keep the baby in a laundry basket until they are old enough to sleep in the parents bed?? What the Fu@k indeed!

Wow...just wow. She needs to be hit with some common sense. A crib a waste of money? Wow. Am I rude for calling her a dumba*s?

  • One of my friends is a peds neurologist and used a laundry basket for a little while when her daughter was born, BUT it was not planned.  The baby was four weeks early, they were moving that weekend, and were waiting for the furniture to arrive.  I mean I guess it would work but maybe encourage her towards at least getting a pack-n-play?  Not sure how a laundry basket ranks up there with all the SIDS precautions!

    Seriously, WTF!

  • Your friend is stupid. Did you ask her would she like to sleep in a laundry basket. Maybe she is having money issues but still that is unacceptable.
  • My baby brother slept in a laundry basket for a while when he was a baby. Then he slept in the cradle that I had from when I was a baby nearly 12 years earlier. I agree that spending money on a crib that will only last about a year is an expensive investment if you are only having one child and wont be able to recycle/reuse it later on. Our crib, cradle, and bassinet were all used and hand me downs and we are happy with them. As long as you could afford the investment she has no right to complain about how you spend your money... or hang up on you for that matter.
  • She?s a winner.

well we bought a convertable crib, so its the crib, toddler/daybed/ and full size headboard and footboard as well. it will get much more than one year of use

  • I wouldn't... but I've heard of people using dresser drawers too. I think that's how they did it like in the 1800s. now you'd be likely to have social services called on you. Stick out tongue

LOL - I was thinking more like a college student in a dorm... you probably wouldn't want the baby on the top bunk with you, so use the laundry basket, broke college student-style! Wink

  • Ummm WTF?  I don't see how she can argue that a crib is a waste of money...ours converts to a toddler bed, twin bed and to a queen head/footboard.  Technically DD could use it for 18 + years.  Most laundry baskets have holes in them that baby could get their arms, legs and even head stuck in!!!  She is an idiot!
  • I guess I'm the only one who doesn't think this is that awful ... a laundry basket can't be any more uncomfortable than the "mattress" that comes in the PNP. ;) And she won't be able to use it for more than a month or so anyway ... I guess a crib would be a waste of money if you weren't going to use it very long. I also won't berate her for hanging up on you ... you sound like you were giving her a piece of your mind about it, and I might have hung up on you too. ;)

All that said, I do personally plan on using both a PNP and a crib. :)

seeing as how i listened to ber b!tch to me about how i wasted my money and what i should have done instead of buying a crib, she could have heard me out as well for my opinion on what she was going to do rather than just hang up so she didnt have to listen to what i had to say. thats just a rude person.

  • Reminds me of the story my mom tells me about how when she first brought me home from the hospital, I looked sooo tiny in the crib and she wanted me near her so she made a dresser drawer comfy and pulled it out and kept me in there for a couple weeks hehe.  But, she *did* have a crib and I eventually used it!  Wow...even if you don't have much money, there are some cheap but safe cribs out there, they're small but they work till the kid can move on to a toddler bed...

  • I probably wouldn't even use a laundry basket to keep a puppy in, let alone a baby!

If you put a mattress in it, it wouldn't be so bad, but just putting the baby down on moveable blankets is really unsafe.

    I'll agree with that.

  • Granted this was 17 years ago but my aunt put my cousin in a laundry basket for the first few weeks/months.  I have kind of joked about it.  I said I have all I need for the first few months, her car seat.  If I don't get a crib or bassinet, then she can always sleep in a laundry basket.  I wasn't all that serious but I really don't think of it as being all that bad.

ETA:  We are getting a crib and have a PNP.

  • Hey since she is using regular household items to furnish a bed, why doesn't she use the bathtub? It's quite roomy!

Haha, and comfy!! DH makes fun of me because for awhile when we would would go out drinking, if I overdid it I would take some blankets and sleep in the tub, it was always nice and warm from the air vents running underneath it and handy access to the toilet if need be!

reminds me of a conversation we had this morning before my partner left of him taking the baby to work. We thought the desk drawer might be a good place to chill out with blankets and toys. Stick out tongue

of course we wouldn't actually do that.

a dresser isn't much different then a trundle bed IMO.

  • One of the girls I work with has a family tradition of using a laundry basket instead of a bassinet.  It is an old laundry basket that has been passed around the family.  It looks a lot like a Moses Basket.  I think it is cute but not for me.

  • My MIL said that DH used to sleep in a dresser drawer when they went to visit her sister every now and then..... odd but not too crazy, I guess it's better than having them roll off something onto the floor but this girl is the mom, a laundry basket isn't exactly a permanent solution..... I can see not wanting to buy a bassinet but a crib? Especially when you can find them so cheap now or splurge a bit and get them a convertible that will last them foreverm that's our theory - yeah it was $400 but they're going to sleep in/on it until they are 18+.

True, but to be fair to my mom, she did pull out the drawer, like, completely I believe and had it by her bed :)  I don't think I was just hanigng out in an open dresser drawer :)

    now theres an idea ...

  • hanging up on you about it is a bit much.... well, more than a bit - it's pretty rude actually. And I think a crib is a wise investment.

But.... to play devil's advocate here, I have to say, I've seen some pretty nice laundry baskets around.... some that look very similar to bassinets:)

  • Yikes.  I guess maybe I could see doing that if you really have no other options, for like a month maybe if you can't even afford a hand me down bassinet or something.  But if you have the ability to provide a better solution for your baby by all means buy what you think is best!  I think she is crazy for making you feel like you wasted money on a crib, that is what most normal prepared parents to be do.

  • Umm it's a baby, not a puppy or kitten. I don't think investing in a crib is a waste of money at all. Ours is a convertible that we plan on using for all of our children so we spent a little extra money on it so we know it will last. People are so cheap-a laundry basket seriously?
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I may be missing something, but I don't see what the big deal is about using a laundry basket. I don't personally think a crib is a waste of money, but I don't really see anything wrong with using a laundry basket instead of buying a crib and a bassinet. It was very common for people to use dresser drawers for baby beds. And think of a Moses basket- looks quite a bit like a laundry basket if you ask me.

  • I think there are definitely a variety of perfectly fine places for a baby to sleep.. as long as the baby is comfortable and safety is not an issue - it's really just a matter of personal preference.
  • WTF is right! My ILs have this same attitude and were pissed that BIL and his wife bought a crib when they had a baby.  I did even talk to them about cribs or furniture but I am sure that they think I am really irresponsible.
  • imageearthycrunchymama:

maybe she should be called on. How safe is sleep in a laundry basket for the long term. at best they  will set her straight about where  a baby should sleep.

we no longer live in a time that a dresser drawer is ok.

  • Interesting opinions both ways.  If you call a laundry basket a bassinet and dress it up as one...how much is it really all that different?

Here's an article I found informative about SIDS.
