Bday gift for a 3 year old-is this okay?

Macy has been invited to a bday party this Saturday and I need to find a gift for the little girl. I was thinking about buying a gift card for $25 and also putting it with my $25 gymbucks. The only reason I thought about it is because the mom loves Gymboree but has not been able to shop there. The dad is a dental student and they are living off his student loans.

Or get the girl a toy or something girl related that she would like? Should I worry that the bday girl will not like the gift as much as the mom will? I like to buy things that people will use and not just junk that will be thrown away later.

  • Is it possible to just get her some Gymbo clothes?  And if the mom doesn't love them, or they are not her style, she can always return and exchange.

    Just a thought...

  • While I totally think the sentiment is nice, the little girl definately wont have a lot of fun opening a gift card.   I think it depends on the setting honestly.  If she's going to be ripping into gifts and you want to her to have that excitement, I'd probably get her something she'd enjoy.  Orrrrrr....you could do a toy + the gymbucks to achieve both objectives.

  • If you know her size I would take the Gymbucks to Gymboree and buy her something instead of giving her the actual Gymbucks, if she really loves gymobree then I am sure whatever you pick will be fine.  Then I would get a small toy for the little girl on the side.  Or you could do a "beach" theme gift and get a swimsuit and hat from Gymboree and then make a basket of beach goodies and put it all together.

Thanks for the idea. I think that is a better gift to do a combo. I was secretly trying to avoid the mall today. But I also don't want to get a gift the girl won't be excited about either.

Martha: Beach theme! Love it! I can definitely find something for that.

I think this is a WONDERFUL gift and I wouldn't worry about not having a toy for the little girl to open. Maybe I am a mean mommy, but a nice practical gift that is sure to be used is always appreciated. Most kids have waaaaaay too many toys anyway IMO.

  • I agree with Karen. When there's a mountain of toys, one "less" toy isn't going to be noticed. If they are living off of student loans, I'm sure she'd be happy to have something practical (the Mom, that is.) But you never know, some kids love clothes too. I also really liked Martha's idea.

  • I like to give books. I buy a nice hard cover picture book. You can NEVER have too many books but you can have too many toys. At 3, I wouldn't give clothes to a friend because everyone has their own style and the 3 year old is not going to want to open up a gift that is clothes.
