Went in for a diaper rash came out with an ear infection

Ava's rash was so bad that daycare called me today.  Even though I had just called an hour before and checked on her and they said everything was ok.  I decided to call the pedi.  If you recall in February we were in the ER with what turned out to be a double ear infection.  Not even two weeks later she was diagnosed with another double ear infection.  Went back for an ear check on Friday and the doctor said she still had fluid in her ears.  He told us to give her Zyrtec for 2 weeks and then come back to have her ears checked.  Not even a week later we go to the pedi for the rash and he checks her ears.  He diagnoses her with another ear infection.  SERIOUSLY!!!  At what point to they think she may need to see an ENT?  I wasn't at the appointment today but according to DH if it doesn't clear up this time the pedi said he may refer us to an ENT.  I am just over ear infections!!!

Oh and he said to use lotrimin for the rash.

  • Poor baby girl!  I don't understand why they wouldn't recommend it either?  So sorry, I hope Ava is feeling better soon (rash too!). : (

  • I would LOVE to know what it is with kids and ear infections. Why does it seem like they CONSTANTLY have them? Hopefully she can just go to an ENT soon and you can get it all under control.

  • Aww I'm sorry. We just had the same thing happen and now it's double infections too... I took her in for a reaction to peanuts (rash) and they said she had an ear infection. Then she had hives as a reaction to the new antibiotics and when I took her in for that, they said she had an infection in both ears. Her nose is runny clear so it must be allergies or something.
  • Kids Eustacia tubes are more horizontal than adults, so they trap bacteria and fluid much easier. That is why kids get more infections than adults.

I'm so sorry about Ava. Poor baby. I hope the lotrimin helps quickly.

  • Poor thing! If your insurance allows it, I'd take her to the ENT without waiting for the pedi if you think that's where you're going to end up anyway. I hope she's on the mend soon.

Ditto this.  Unless your insurance requires a referral, I don't see why you need to wait for the Dr to reccommend it.  Each Dr is different- ours suggested it after just 4 infections and given what you've just described, I think you guys would really benefit from a consult.  Hope she's better soon!

  • Even if your insurance requires a referral...PUSH IT.  You are your LO's only advocate...MAKE your doctor refer ASAP.   Ear infections hurt so much :(
