Do you care if your doc delivers you?

Just wondering especially gals in multiple doc practices how you feel about another doc delivering you.[Poll]

Re: Do you care if your doc delivers you?

  • As my mom has put it "When your at that point you won't care if its the janitor". Gotta love the perspective of a mom of 5.

  • I can honestly say that I dont even think I've met a real OB... My midwife is the only person I ever see, and the odds of her even being the one to deliver me, is probably slim. :] Eh, I dont mind though.
  • Though I see my doc and my doc alone, there are 7 other doc's in the practice.  It will not hurt my feelings one bit if I go into labor and have an on-call doc deliver me.  All the doc does is catch the baby and stitch you up afterwards - the nurses all do the rest!
  • I go to an midwifery practice now- I am not assigned to anyone MW, who ever is on duty will deliver.

When I went to a larger OB practice w/ 8 OBs, I had never been to the practice before I got my BFP (I had just moved to the area) - and while I was "technically" the patient of the first doctor I saw, I never considered her "my doctor" as I knew it was basically a crapshoot as to who would be on call when I was in labor and I managed to meet w/ every doc before I did deliver.

  • I said special snowflake.  I would prefer my doctor to deliver just because he knows me and my history, but as long as the baby gets out safely I will be happy.

  • I care because I have paid a lot of $$$ to see this guy throughout my pregnancy, and if possible I'd like him to be the doc to deliver because I am comfortable with him.

However, if it does happen on a weekend when he's not on call then so be it.

  • There are 6 doctors in the practice I go to and when you are pregnant they ask that you see each of them at least once because there is no guarantee who will be on call when you are in labor.  I don't care which one delivers the baby, I just want her to come out fast and easy.  ;)
  • yes, it's important to me.  She delivered my last two and did a great job and I healed really well.
Since this is my last, I want her do deliver my LO and make sure I'm stitched up good.

Plus, she and her partner have teamed up with another practice that include male doctors and even though I know they are capable, I'm still uncomfortable by this.

I'd much rather have my doctor (who I have been with for 4 1/2 years) deliver my child.

  • I put unsure, but I really will only get to have a preference if I end up scheduling an induction.  I have a 1 in 5 chance of getting the doctor I've been seeing if I go into labor on my own so it doesn't really matter.

  • I'd love my midwife to be the one on call....but if not I have met the other two and feel equally comfortable with them.  Plus I will have my doula no matter what.
  • It would be nice if my doc is there to deliver the baby, but once the contractions start coming fast and furious, I doubt I'll even care.
  • *special snowflake

I would LOVE for my doctor to deliver me, however I'm 99% sure she won't be. Her rounds at the hospital are over, she was there all the night shifts last month and is now back at the clinic section. I've been in the hospital so many times this pregnancy though, that all the doctors and nurses recognize me Embarrassed lol so I'm fairly fine with the idea that one of them will be delivering me.

  • I actually hope my dr isnt the one to deliver my baby. I really do not like her at all and tried switching late in my pregnancy but in my crap little town & with pregnancy complications no other dr's would take me so I was stuck. There are several other drs in the practice so I'm actually hoping mine isnt on call when we deliver... sounds terrible I know
"Dear Lord, I would have loved to have held my babies on my lap and tell them about you, but since I didn't get the chance, would you please hold them on your lap and tell them about me?" DD 9/22/03 Our little sassypants! DS 4/10/10 My little man is growing so fast
  • I'm getting my stomach cut open, hell yeah I care if its MY doctor! Luckily he's not supposed to be out of town between now and my delivery so yee haw! With DS I had multiple docs and it sucked. The doctor who chose to induce me (medically needed) wasn't the same one who did my emergency csection, and then it was a totally different doc who saw me during my post partum care. Yikes!

  • I would prefer if my doctor delivers (I've heard that she is amazing during labor and delivery), but it won't be the end of the world if it's one of the other 3 doctors in the practice.

  • I posted as unsure. I like my OB a lot and havent really had much face time with the others in his practice, but they all have like minded philosophies on all my concerns (tearing vs cut, when to induce, when to c/s, etc) so while I would rather my doc deliver me if I go into the hospital and he is already with another mom then I know my desires will be met with his colleagues.
  • Nah, I don't care.  I'm pretty laid-back. I don't plan to even have a birth plan.  But BEST BELIEVE,  if my doctor can't be there for some reason, and the doctor on duty is a jerk or something, that I will be voicing my concerns to anyone who will listen.

I'm not worried though. My hospital is pretty awesome.

I'd prefer my dr b/c there are a bunch of drs in town that are the only dr in their practice.  They all have come together to share on-call duties with each other, which is great for them, but b/c they're all in separate practices their patients don't even get to meet them at all before hand.  A couple of them I've heard great things about.  One of them I've heard absolutely terrible things about in terms of bed-side manner and delivery techniques.  However, b/c I've done this before, I'm not as worried about it as I would be if I was a first timer.  The nurse makes a bigger impact on delivery than the dr IMO.

  • I put yes, but only because he's one of the few at my hospital that speaks English, and is Western so understands our birth plan/preferences.  We've been told we would have to fight a Chinese doctor on a lot of issues.

  • I've been seeing my OB for 21 years, since I was 18, so yes, I definitely want him to be the one to deliver.  I made a point of asking him at my last appt if he had vacation planned in the next 6 weeks or so.  He laughed and said no, he was vacationed out.  I reminded him that the last time I went to L&D, he was on a plane back from the Bahamas and I was his first patient when he got back.
  • I would actually prefer a different doctor than my own.  :)  I just like his personality SOO much and he's very pro-natural birth compared to the others.  Mine is a close second choice though.

As for the rest: not so much wanting them to deliver me.  I hadn't really thought it would matter much, but at the last appointment, my Dr. was warning me about the other doctors in the practice who would do an episiotomy without asking so that we would know to tell them up front we don't want that done.  Basically, all of the older Drs. in the practice might do it, and plus a couple of the older ones are very intervention happy (as in, one a few weeks ago used a vaccuum because the woman had been pushing 20 MINUTES!!)  There's just a pretty drastic difference in philosophy between the older and younger Drs. in my practice, and so I'd very much prefer one of the younger ones!

  • I go to a practice with over 10 doctors, but I usually see the same guy.

I'd prefer him just because I think he is awesome, but I like everyone else in the practice I've met too.

So long as they give me the drugs and get the baby out healthy I do not care.

  • I go to a practice with 3 doctors, any of whom can deliver. I actually am only comfortable with one, and found out yesterday she is out for a few weeks for surgery. So, at this point, I don't care. I don't like either of the other doctors, but one will deliver me.
  • I care that it be one of the two doctors in my practice. We have to switch hospitals and I don't know anything about the on-call doctors at the new hospital. I know the on call docs at our old hospital were wonderful and had similar philosophies regarding birth (very relaxed).

However, in the end, as long as baby is healthy and I am healthy I don't really care.

Edit: One of the midwives in the practice would be just fine too.

  • Don't care much at all.  My OB last time didn't deliver DD, and it was fine.  This OB tries to make the birth of each of her patients, but doesn't/can't guarantee it.

  • I said yes, because of course I'd PREFER someone I'm very familiar with. However, she fell back asleep and missed my 3:13am delivery last time and really, it was so not a big deal.

The doctor's involvement in actual delivery was maybe 2% of the whole experience, you know? I think most just show up to "catch," and as long as DH was very familiar with my preferences and drilled them into the residents head "NO EPISIOTOMY!!", it turned out fine.

  • You won't care at that point. My office has 7 docs who rotate. I lucked out and my favorite was on call that day. But, it really didn't matter. She's really on there for the pushing (which was 30 minutes max). The nurses are who make or break your experience.
  • My practice has only one OB and I want him to deliver LO.  He's always on call unless he's on vacation, and he took his vacation last month, so he says he's available over the next week! I really like him and I'm comfortable with him and trust his judgment, so if he's not there (because of an emergency), it would be a bummer.

  • I said yes. I have had the same midwife for my last three babies. I love her and she realy knows me and my husband. She seems to know just what I need without me even asking. She was great at helping me with my miscarriage. She just knows what I like. She has worked alone in her own office for years. Every appointment was with her and she was at every delivery. But the problem was that she was getting so busy. She was always working. My youngest was born on a Friday morning and my midwife did not get out of the hospital all wekend. She finally left when we checked out. So she hired two more midwives that seem to be very much like her. I have met the new two midwives and they are great but I would still prefer my midwife be at the delivery. We are going to try a waterbirth this time so I would feel better trying something new with someone I know.
  • I would certainly prefer to be delivered by my OB, but I realize that may not happen. When my daughter was born, I was delivered by the on-call doctor and it was fine. She was only there for the last couple contractions/pushing and then to stitch me up. I really didn't care who caught the baby at that point.

My nurse was more worried then I was because she'd never done a delivery on her own before. My mom was there and she's been a L&D nurse for almost 20 years now. The nurse was asking her what size gloves she wore so she could assist before the doctor finally walked in.

This time, I'm more worried that my mom won't make it then about my doctor making it.
