3rd Trimester

Do larger head measurements mean anything?

We had an u/s done today. We have one done every 2 weeks so this was just routine.

The last time we went in, he was measuring exactly 2 weeks ahead, and everything looked normal. Today, his femur and abdomen were right on track. But, his head is measuring quite large. I am 28w 5d, and his head diameter was measuring 32w 1d and the circumference was 30w 5d.

The Dr. didn't say much other than we would watch it. I have another u/s in 2 weeks. I called my mom and she started talking about downs syndrome and other abnormalities. Thanks mom, now I am freaking out. Please tell me I am worrying over nothing....

Re: Do larger head measurements mean anything?

  • I don't think a large head has anything to do with downs

just that your baby has a big head

as dh & I have big heads, I feel that it's likely our baby will too

they are probably just keeping an eye on it as to whether they will recommend a c-section or not

  • I had abnormal measurements at my 20 week growth u/s.  The baby's femur and abdomen were on track, but the head was big (I don't remember how much more).  Anyway, I got all freaked out about it too, and was on the internet researching constantly.  After a few days I just tried to forget about it until my follow-up u/s a month later.  He measured exactly on track in all three places at the follow-up.  My doctor said the first measurements could have been off because of the angle they were taken or the baby was just growing at different rates, which isn't a big deal.

    So don't worry! :)

  • my dd measured very large head size also in u/s....

she was born with a head circumference in the 98th %!! (i also had to get an episiotomy to help get her head out!)

she is completely healthy and her head growth has slowed down significantly.  her head now measures in the 70th % for circumference.

    i would not worry!

  • I had my 34 wk growth scan today and baby was measuring right on @ 34w4d and his head was measuring 37w and some change. My dr said it was fine.

  • Thanks for talking me down : )

I refused to let myself google anything, because that always makes things worse. I was fine leaving the Dr.'s, but then I called my mom and she got me all worked up. I figured it meant nothing other than he had a big head.

If his head gets "too big," I hope I won't have to have a c-section.

your baby boy probably has a big brain!   (that is what i told myself about my big-headed girl!)

i don't think they do c-sections just based on head circumference.  you may tear a bit or need a small episiotomy.  i had a few stitches and was sore for a few weeks after birth but it was nothing major!  GL!

Awe.. maybe he'll be smart then. That's good to know, thank you!

  • Look at yourself and your S/O in the mirror.  Do either one of you have a big head?  If the answer is yes, that is where the big head came from.  I can not wear ladies hats.  At 34 weeks, the baby's head was measuring at 38 weeks.  No other problems, just a big head.  Tell your mom to calm down.  Who knows, the big head may have come from her family.

Neither of us have big head. Just your average heads lol. I don't think it would have come from my side. I think it may have come from DH's side. His dad does have a pretty big head. But that's the only person that stands out to me.

  • My son has a huge head! He's always measured in the 101st percentile! My niece did too and really, I kind of have a big head. Not that you really notice. It is more like long from forhead straight back.

I think they want to keep an eye on it for the sake of your birth. Like, if you get to 10 cm and push for more than an hour, they'll probably want a c-section before they make you go too long. There is no way to know if your pelvic structure can handle a big head till you are in childbirth. This is what happeend to my sister-in-law with my niece. I never got that far since they did a c/s on me due to baby's low heart rate at 3 cm. I'm hoping for a VBAC this time around and we'll just have to see if my pelvic structure is like my mom's since she birthed out 3 big-headed kids! I had an u/s yesterday and while they did not do a measurement, the tech did raise eyebrows at his big head!
