Alabama Babies

My birth story (obviously long...)

I woke up at about 1:30 because Jenna was in her crib crying out "MOMMY!!!  I want snuggles!!!"  I usually just let her yell for a while until she goes back to sleep, but I love snuggling my little girl, so I decided to go ahead and get up.  On my way to her room, I noticed a little trickle, but being 39 weeks pregnant, figured I was probably just peeing myself = )  Decided to hit the bathroom first and empty my bladder, and grabbed a towel to take in to Jenna's room *just in case*.  I rocked J until she was back to sleep and when I stood up to put her back in her crib, I felt a gush...  Good thing I had picked up that towel.

I woke Mike up and told him it was time.  Called my OB's office and they (obviously) told me I needed to head to the hospital.  I asked if I could take a shower first and they told me it was fine as long as I could be there in about an hour.  (NOTE:  I was later told by my nurse that I should have come right in b/c once your water breaks, you don't want to mess around.  However, I was still glad I got a shower!)  We threw the final items in our hospital bags while we waited for Mike's mom to come over and stay with Jenna.

We headed to the hospital and I was having semi-regular, but not very intense contractions.  I got out of Mike's truck and *GUSH* - holy crap - I thought my water had truly broken before, but I was soaked this time!  Again, good thing I had another towel handy!

Things were relatively uneventful from there.  My contractions were not very regular - about 4-7 minutes apart.  I was still only about 2cm dilated.  At around 7:30 am, the nurse talked to me about starting Pitocin.  I told her I really didn't want to start yet (I was induced with Jenna and it was really not a good experience) so we agreed to wait and see what happened.  Unfortunately, nothing really progressed, and by about 11 or so, they started Pitocin on a very low setting.  That really seemed to kick things in to gear - I definitely started having regular contractions.  By about 12:30, I was 4-5 cm but the pain was pretty bad.  I decided to go ahead and get the epidural.  The time spent waiting for the anesthesiologist seemed to be FOREVER....

Once I got the epi, which was probably around 1:15 or 1:30, things really started moving.  Within an hour I had already progressed to 8 cm, and within another 30 minutes or so, I was 10 cm.  What was weird to me is that although my legs were totally numb, I totally could feel the need to push (I didn't experience that with J).  The nurse had me push through 1 contraction and I guess he was coming quickly b/c she had me stop and called my doctor.  Once the dr got there, I pushed through 3 more contractions and sweet Evan was born at 3:15 pm.  I could not believe I did not tear or have to be cut, given that he was more than 1lb heavier than Jenna!

They wrapped him up and laid him on my chest, and let me tell you, even though this is my 2nd, there is just nothing like that moment in time.  When J was born, I didn't get to hold her right away b/c we both became distressed during delivery - so I think it made the moment all that more special.  That overwhelming feeling of pure love is just unbelievable.

All in all, everyone is doing well.  Jenna doesn't really seem to phased by him and *helps* when she can.  I'm sure part of it is he doesn't do much more than sleep, eat, pee and poop - and once he becomes more time consuming, I'll be interested to see how she adjusts.  BF is going pretty well - he is a lazy latcher, so it's been a little hard - mostly on my poor nipples.... (J was a champion nurser from day 1).  He's been sleeping o.k. at night - the first 2 nights sucked, but we now let him sleep in his swing (not turned on) and it's been better.  Last night he actually slept for a 4 hr stretch and 2 - 3+ hr stretches!

So, there it is, the official documentation of the birth of my sweet Evan Michael = )

  • Congrats again Lisa!  Even though I'm not a mother yet, I can understand the overwhelming love you have for your child when you meet them for the first time.  Sometimes I imagine myself giving birth and having the nurse place the baby on my chest and I get teared up!

    Siggy coming soon....

  • What a great birth story! :o)

With my first epi I was completely numb as well, but with Abby I could feel the pressure and knew when to push. To me, it made the whole delivery so much easier.

     Glad everyone is doing well!!!

  • Thank you for sharing that Lisa!  Birth stories are so precious!  Congrats again!

  • What a great story!  I'm so glad everything went well.  I agree that feeling the baby move down into the birth canal and feeling the need to push while being totally numb was weird.  Awesome that you didn't tear!  I'm so happy for you and your family!  Welcome Evan!
  • What a good birth story- you know I rarely hear of water breaking naturally. Evan was ready to arrive- yay!
