Cloth Diapers: 2nd timers/cloth diaperers come in!

I know there have been tons of different posts about this, but I thought it might be good to have everything in one place. I've been researching every kind of diaper and am so confused on what people actually prefer to use! I've looked at all the info on diaperpin.com. I feel like I'm going to be spending tons of money on a bunch of random diapers just figuring out what we want to do! We don't have any stores around our area to go look at the different types, we'd have to order all of them online. So, here are my questions, and thanks so much for any info!

What brand/type of diaper is your favorite to use? Why?

Did the price matter to you? Or was it just ease of the diaper?

What kinds of diapers have you tried and not liked as well? (pros & cons of other diapers)

Where do you buy your diapers? Best prices?

Any advice for first timers? What not to do?

  • jillians drawers has a trial so you can get hands on with the different types: will only cost you $10 unless you decide to keep some (they are reasonably priced).

  • I prefer One Size Pockets.  I have only tried and used Babyland OS pocket diapers that I bought off ebay.  I have been very successful with then and they are only $4 a diaper.  Our daycare also uses them and likes them.  Personally, using a diaper that works well is more important than price.  Fortunately we found something that is inexpensive that works for us.  I'm going to try some other diapers too, I'm addicted to fluffy butts and so I like to get fluffy mail.

As a newborn we used prefolds with covers, fitted and covers and contours and covers and like all of them.  I think the Kissaluv contours were my favorite but all of them worked well.  I think the key is if you want to CD from the start you need a NB stash and either a sized stash or a OS stash.

  • What brand/type of diaper is your favorite to use? Why? - Happy Heiny os or Green Acre Designs (GADS) for day and bum genius 3.0 for night time.  This is just the combo that worked best for ds.  I like the pockets b/c as an older baby he needed doublers anyway to contain the volume of stuff so i'd have to stuff an aio anyway.

Did the price matter to you? Or was it just ease of the diaper? - ease of cd first followed by price.  i'm not spending $60 on a cd, but i'm willing to pay more for pockets than be super frugal and deal w/ pre-folds.

What kinds of diapers have you tried and not liked as well? (pros & cons of other diapers) - i tried aio and fitteds as well.  i liked the aio, but needed the doubler.  i plan on using aio for this baby at first.  fitteds were ok, but they seemed to stay wetter than a pocket so they irritated ds skin more.

Where do you buy your diapers? Best prices? - gogonatural.com, cottonbabies.com, and greenacredesigns.com  - gogonatural is great for supplies too.  they have awesome wetbags.

Any advice for first timers? What not to do? - don't complete your stash until you try a few different kinds.  just like sposies not all cd work for all babies.  think underwear, different fits and styles for different tushes.  also, remember it doesn't have to be all or none.  if you're having trouble at first keep exploring.  if dcp can't/won't take cd it doesn't mean you have to give them up completely.

  • What brand/type of diaper is your favorite to use? Why?

We chose to use BG 3.0 mostly because of daycare, turns out they would have used our prefolds, but they do like the ease of use that the BG 3.0's offer, we wanted a diaper that they would use and didn't want to have several different kinds of diapers floating around the house.  We use prefolds at home too because they were cheap and I bought a ton of GMD seconds.

Did the price matter to you? Or was it just ease of the diaper?

The price was sort of a factor, it was difficult for us to invest a large amount of $$ upfront for all the diapers, so we probably wouldn't have been able to afford Blueberrys or any of the tad more expensive ones.  The ease of use was a huge factor because of daycare, we wanted them to use the CD's so we decided to try to find the easiest ones to use that we could afford so that they would use them.

What kinds of diapers have you tried and not liked as well? (pros & cons of other diapers)

We have some Grobaby's, Rumparooz, Fuzzi Bunz and a Blueberry, in addition to prefolds and covers.  The Thirsties were the best when she was very little because she hardly wet at all and they were easy to swap out with the prefolds, etc.  The Grobaby's fit her from day one, but the velcro got all curled up (probably my fault from improper washing or something) so they come undone from time to time.  They also don't hold the poo in as great as the others.  The Rumparooz are nice, but seem a little bulker than the BG.  The Fuzzi Bunz are nice we could have easily used those instead of the BG, but they don't carry them at our local CD store.  The Blueberry is cute, and works alright too, no complaints.  We like the microsuede I think it's called, rather than the fleece, the fleece seems prone to leaks for us.

Where do you buy your diapers? Best prices?

We've gotten diapers from our local CD store here, www.goores.com, you get a little discount for buying a bunch, and from the Nuture Center, www.nuturecenter.com.  Diaper Swappers is where I bought a variety of diapers to try out to see what we liked best, sorry I didn't really buy many online.

Any advice for first timers? What not to do?

I would say, maybe try that Jillian's Drawers trial, that seems like a really good deal to find out what works for you.  I bought a variety of used diapers to find out what worked, and some of them were, well, really used.  :)
