Doc was wrong! I passed the biggest kidney stone I've ever seen!

Interesting story if your bored: I am prone to kidney stones and started having a really bad back ache last Thursday night. I ended up in L&D on Friday morning, because it would just not go away. They monitored the baby (found out I was having contractions - timeable) and they took a blood and urine sample from me. Found a little blood in my urine and diagnosed me with a UTI. Even though I told everyone I came in contact with (including the house doctor) that I was prone to kidney stones and had even passed a little one when I was in my 1st tri. He told me that it's extremely rare to have kidney stones while pregnant and very common to have UTI's. So I was sent home with Tylenol 3's and Antibiotics. They did give me a shot to stop the contractions (which stopped them, but not entirely), but I thought it was strange that they never did an ultrasound on my kidney, just to make sure.

The pain in my back had disapeared while I was in the hospital (apparently the stone had moved into my bladder by then).

I had a horrible reaction to the antibiotics and spent all day Saturday dizzy, throwing up and extremely tired (of course this is the day we hosted Easter, needless to say, I was in my room the entire day). I never did feel the "burning sensation" while peeing that so many people talk about with UTI's, but I did have the sensation to have to pee all the time and that little pinching feeling down there. Well, finally last night, I could not fall asleep and was going pee like every 20 minutes. When I was done I looked in the toilet and there lo and behold was the biggest kidney stone I have ever seen (I've had them 4 times now). I kept it and am going to show it to my ob tomorrow. Now that I have passed it, I feel really good!

It's just frustrating that he didn't believe me and did nothing to look for a stone. At least it moved and didn't get stuck (I've had to have a stent because of this and inflamed kidney). That was horrible. It all worked out, but still. It was not easy going through while pregnant, that is for sure.

  • I don't remember if I responded to your post on 3rd tri, but YIKES!  I'm going in tomorrow for my kidney stent removal due to a stone that wouldn't pass.  This is misery--I hope it's over for you!

Were you able to pass it with the stent in? When I had my stent, one of the stones passed, but one was stuck between the stent and the wall of my Ureter. Once they pulled the stent out, the stone came right out within hours.

  • Freaking ouch!

And I would love to show my doc that as a big I TOLD YOU SO!

  • Glad you're feeling better!  I passed a kidney stone when I was about 28 weeks.  I'd never had kidney stones before, so I thought I was in pre-term labor.  Hang in there.
  • OMG - I can't even imagine how that feels. I'm glad you kept and I would so say I told you so and then ask for a refund=)

There was no sign of the stone on the x-ray that was taken yesterday, so we're hoping that it passed.  How long did you have your stent in?  They wanted to leave mine in until after I have the baby, but I am in constant pain with this thing--I just can't take it!

  • Wow, so glad it passed!  I woke up profusely sweating and thinking of you.  I saw your sweating post and saw that you already had a lot of replies.  I had been going to tell you that this was happening to me as well but has gotten better now that I wear a tank top to bed.  Not helping so much right now.  I think I'm just really pumped that I lost my mp in a big way tonight so I'm expecting labor soon.  So I shoulf be getting rest but I can't shut down.  I did this to myself about a week ago, too and got the worst night's sleep ever for no reason.
  • Oh no!  Glad you are ok!
  • Oh, ow!  I just had a kidney stone 3 weeks ago and I was miserable with a capital M.
