Anyone know anything about ticks?

Ugh, I feel all itchy all over. I just found a tick in DS's hair. It must have been there since the weekend. It was nasty and I must admit I'm a little freaked out. I'm really not a nature kind of girl, so I've never experienced this and I'm afraid to google.

We got it out. I cut the body off (not knowing what it was at first) and then DH managed to get the head out with some tweezers. *shudder*

  • Just watch the area for a target mark.  If you see a red ring around where the tick was in his head, call the pedi.

I hate ticks!  I found one on DD#1 about 2 weeks ago and I'm still itchy!!

  • ugh, I just had this happen on saturday. I couldn't get it out of E's head at all. My BIL couldn't either and we had to bring her to the pedi to get it out. This is what he told us:  watch her for the next 3 weeks for any signs of the "bulls eye", fever, anything odd.  Put bacitracin on the spot for a few days.  He couldn't tell us if he got the head out. He said if it was only there 24-36 hours, there is less likelihood of possibly lyme disease.

do you know if it was a deer tick?  They are much smaller - they say the size of a ballpoint pen end.

We have a ton of them up our way. it's gross and I hate it. We usually do checks whenever the kids come in but I honestly failed to do it on E on friday. I felt terrible it was my fault.

  • DH thinks it was a horse tick because we were at the horse farm with our friends. It was so seriously gross.

I'm going to call the pedi tomorrow morning and see what he says.

  • We have the head. I cut the body off not realizing what it was and flushed it.

  • I work at an animal hospital so I know more about ticks then I ever wanted too :)

There are more ticks that carry lyme disease then just the deer tick.  At one point it was believed that all ticks carried lyme.  Unfortunately in MA we have a high risk of lyme, at the animal hospital I work at (in MA) we test every dog yearly for lyme and more then half test positive.  I would apply some bacitracin and watch for the bullseye or symptoms.  You could talk to your doctor about prevetative antibiotics, i'm not sure if they'll do that, though I have heard of a few people going on antibiotics after getting bit by a tick and prior to noticing any symptoms.

With dogs if you don't get the head of the tick the body will eventually reject it so its not a big deal.  In the future take tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the head as possible and just pull it out.

And while we are all so happy that winter is finally ending the bugs have begun...

  • Thanks marchbaby. I'll definitely pick up some Bacitracin tomorrow and start applying it.

Ugh. I feel so bad he had that thing in his head for so long. :(

  • I just found a tick in DDs ear today, yuck!  It had to have been recent thankfully though because she had her 3 year check up today and I am sure the dr would have seen it.  My mom told me to put oil on it to try and kill it then we took tweezers and pluck it out.
