3rd Trimester

contractions that aren't painful

I've been having contractions all morning (~10 min apart), although they've slowed down a bit lately.  I just had an appointment, and I'm not dilated at all.  Probably just false labor.  Are these contractions Braxton Hicks, or are they real, and just not getting me anywhere?

This is what I think becuase my doc said that contractions are very painful and will know when they are the real deal.... They are most likely braxton hicks.

  • They are probably BH since they don't hurt but there is a slight chance that they are real. When I was in labor with Brittyn I never did have a painful contraction. I got an epi at the last minute bc I was afraid it *would* get painful, but up until the needle went in my back I didn't have even one single painful contraction, the nurses were amazed.

  • Do they hurt?  You will feel them in your lower back, abdomen, down into your legs... they feel GREAT!  I am having to go in weekly to check for dilation from contractions... they are painful!  If it's just your belly tightening up then they are BH.

No, they don't hurt, per se, but my belly tightens up and I guess I'd say it's a little uncomfortable, but definitely not painful.

  • I agree with the PP. You will feel them in your lower back, tops of thighs (down your legs), in your abdomen (almost like really really bad period cramps). They will last at least 10 seconds or so and be quite painful but tolerable.
  • I have been having very similiar ones now for the past 3 weeks, and I am dilated 3, so sometimes the not painful ones are doing something to change your cervix. Ask your doc or MW to check you and see what they say. Anything that's timeable my MW said just keep an eye on.

  • Sounds like BH's to me....my contractions that progress me and cause the doctor alarm (since I'm only 34 weeks) are the ones that are about 5 minutes apart, start in the back-move to the front and uncomfortable/feel like strong cramps

  • soudns like BH, but it also sounds like your body is getting ready!  once they get down to 1-3 min apart and are consistent then start packing your bag!  GL!

  • When did you have your appt? Today? Sounds like BH to me. HOWEVER...let me tell you ... my sister had mild cramping and went into her regular 38 week appt having no CLUE that she was 8 cm dilated. So...you never know.  And my sis is a totally "with it" kind of gal. She just expected it to be really painful. It just felt like horrible menstrual cramps, but nothing she couldn't tolerate.
