Okay, Toasters. What KIND of cheese do you use on yours?

I'm a cheese snob.  I cannot STAND the processed American crap that passes for cheese slices.  However, our budget and my schedule tend to pigeonhole us into tossing that on bread when we make cheese toast.

What's your favorite cheese and how would you describe the taste to the rest of us?

  • The processed American cheese slices are not allowed in our house.  I don't particularly like them but DH hates them.  We usually do sharp cheddar on our cheese toast.  Sometimes I'll throw some mozzarella on there instead.  I keep it simple with cheese toast, but love many different kinds of cheese to eat with crackers or in other recipes.  All of this talk about cheese makes me hungry!

  • Land O Lakes white American cheese from the deli, sliced thin. I guess it's processed, but it's what I grew up on and I am addicted. Sooo good on cheese toast.

  • I have hated American cheese for as long as i can remember (too many apple juice and american cheese snacks in school maybe??) so we don't keep it in our house either.  We use either cheddar or pepper jack.  DD LOVES spice and pepper jack cheese.

I like that, too.  The stuff I'm talking about is the Kraft Singles slices that come in the plastic wrappers.  I don't like the slimy texture of it.

  • For cheese toast, I prefer shredded cheddar.  For all other types of sandwiches, it's cheddar slices.  I hate American cheese.

  • Oh and one other weird thing- my dad refuses to eat the pre-shredded cheese that you can buy in the bags at the store.  He makes my mom grate it by hand.  He can really taste the difference- she has tried to trick him before.  So my mom will buy the pre-made stuff for everyone else and actually grate his special for him.  Can you say spoiled?

Yes, I think the packaged ones are slimy too :)

  • for cheese toast and cheeseburgers - Kraft American Cheese.  It simply melts the best.

I don't like the grease and oil that happens after melting "real" cheese.

  • We get Publix 2% milk sliced american cheese in the plastic wrapper.

SLW, I'm with your dad on this one--I HATE buying the pre-shredded kind!  (But I refer back to the OP about time and money making this hard to stay true to..!)

  • I'll use whatever but my preference for cheese toast or grilled cheese sandwiches is a block of cheddar cheese that I slice.  It totally rocks my socks off to make all the little slices I come up with fit like a perfect puzzle on a piece of bread.

Oh, and slw, my mom grates her own cheese, too.  I can totally tell a difference.  Especially in something like Pimento cheese which she makes all the time.

  • We get the pre sliced stuff in the deli section at Publix, usually sharp cheddar, pepper jack, and white american.

  • not a fan of american cheese.  blech.  I like the sharpest cheddar you can find.  I just blot the grease off if it puddles up.

I don't do preshredded cheese either.  I can totally tell a difference, and it doesn't melt as well because of all the preservatives and chemicals they add to it to keep it looking nice.

  • I'm not really a fan of pre-shredded cheese. They actually coat it in cellulose (aka paper!) to keep it from sticking and looking nice. DH just found this out and it totally grossed him out. https://www.sargento.com/faq/#what-are-these-ingredients

  • Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar.  Best grilled cheese/cheese toast ever.

  • We are also on a serious budget and I don't allow American cheese in the house. I stock up on the Sargento cheese slices when they go on sale. Usually provolone or baby swiss. But, I pretty much get 1/2 lb. of Cream Havarti cheese slices from the deli every week. So good and creamy! I love to eat it as a snack on top of crackers w/ some fruit. I also put it on DD's cheese toast. DH eats it straight. When I splurge, I love to buy sliced Gouda or Gruyere.
  • Also the sharpest cheddar we can find, usually one from the UK or New Zealand or Canada. The US doesn't know how to do sharp cheddar!

And also agree on the shredded cheese, so much better fresh!
