how to get rid of monsters?

We seem to have a monster infestation in the house. The past several nights DD has been hysterical shortly after we put her to bed, and when we go in her room she is in her bed completely under ALL the covers, sweating and burning up. She says she is afraid of the monsters so she hides in her bed :(

We've talked about how there's no monsters in the house, we check under the bed and the closet together before she goes to bed and we even tried misting 'monster spray' in the room. Am I going about this the wrong way? We have several books with monsters in them but they are all happy monsters that do fun things, not scary ones. Any noise she doesn't recognize she automatically calls a monster noise.

It's heartbreaking to think she is sweating away under her comforter because she thinks something is going to get her. What else can I do?

  • Maybe try giving her a flashlight? Could it be the dark she's afraid of? Also, do you close her door? You could try leaving it open, maybe putting up a gate instead, that way she doesn't feel so isolated.

  • That is so sad! I wish that I had advice.  Maybe sing a song to get rid of them.  Sleep with the light on?? Your pediatrician - I am sure - has been asked this before.  Wish I had a solution but I just feel awful thinking about this - poor thing!!
  • We have a nightlight in her room that gives off a good amount of light. I don't really want to open her door and open up that world of possibilities for her, if I don't have to. The dark doesn't seem to be as much of an issue as the monsters are. I'll have to see if I can find a cute song

  • What do you think she'll do if you gave her a fun happy looking monster plush animal? You could tell her it'll keep away any bad monsters. I know I've seen those funky looking monsters at WalMart recently but I don't know the name of the cartoon.

Tell her that they moved out and they aren't coming back. Throw a going away party for them and everything.

My oldest (turned 6 in January) has had two long bouts about being worried about monsters. His first time was when he had just turned 4. It lasted for several months. It finally stopped when we moved and we told him that we left them behind and they weren't allowed to follow us.

Then recently he's been really nervous about his closet. I just let him leave his closet light on with the closet door shut. Sometimes he'll also want the hall light on.

    Good luck!

  • You can try a Magic Monster Wand or even a Monster Spray Away (spray bottle) that she can use to scare the monsters away?  I know you said you've tried to spray them away but maybe if she had control over it, it might be better?

Poor thing, I still have monsters sometimes.... :(

  • Maybe use the vacuum cleaner hose to "suck up" any monsters in the closet or under the bed at night...?

  • We have been dealing with monsters (and ghosts - long story) for a while now.

We told him that we don't allow monsters in the house, if they want to come in, they have to knock on the door and ask to come in. Not sure why, but it worked.

we told my son that monsters are afraid of little kids and so when they see them they run away.  Worked great!  He loved to tell everyone that he saw about how he said "ARRRRRR! to the monsters and made them run away".

  • Thanks ladies, I am going to try some of these ideas.

  • I taught DD to say "Begone Monsters!" and then the monsters have to leave. Works on dragons too.

And mommy does not allow monsters in the house (which worked for awhile, but now those sneaky monsters get in sometimes).

I did something similar with DD that she should tell the monster "Boo!" and scare it away and tell it to go find its mommy.  So she does that and says the monsters leave.
