Remind me how to take DS's temp

I know it seems like a stupid question for a mom of a 12 mo old, but DS has rarely ever been sick so I've forgotten. When do I add and subtract a degree from the temp on the thermometer? Do you still do a rectal at this age? His rectal temp was 101.5 and his underarm was 99.6. I used two different thermometers too.

Re: Remind me how to take DS's temp

  • I know that rectal temps are the most accurate and that 99.6 is a normal rectal temp. I'm not sure about the underarm.

  • I usually first check underarm for DS and if it's abnormal I then recheck it rectally.  Normal oral temp is 98.6, normal underarm temp is 97.6, normal rectal is 99.6.

  • Add a degree when it is under the arm. Rectal is always best (well, unless you are the poor kiddo) for getting an accurate temp.
  • Thanks!
