Let's talk candy and toddlers

This is becoming a problem.  Gavin rarely gets candy.  I just don't have it in the house so he only gets it if someone (my mom usually) gives it to him (hello easter bunny!).  I don't mind him having an occasional treat, I'm just wondering what you give your kids, at what age, and how often?  I'm still nervous about him choking- he shoves everything in his mouth super fast and doesn't chew very well.  So while Pez seems like the perfect Easter Basket item, it ends with me being a nervous wreck.  I did let him have a big lollipop in Disney and he did ok with it- made a huge mess of course, but that's to be expected.  What other candy like items do you suggest?

  • DD Loves the SweetTart jellybeans.  She can have them in extreme moderation and as a treat or reward for something but not 'just because'.  My MIL gave her an easter basket and she was more interested in the bracelets than the candy.  It is now all in my desk at work for the guys to share.

  • we are a no candy house.  if he gets it at a party or something we will give him a piece or two but never all of the candy given to us.  until very recently he didn't even know the word candy.  but I'm a nazzi about juice and candy.

  • I generally don't keep candy in the house (more for me, not Geneva). We've allowed Geneva to try all sorts of stuff this Easter. She had a tad at Halloween, but she was just too little to eat most of that stuff. I thought it was pretty funny when she took a bite of a Peep and handed it back to me with an awful look on her face. LOL!

She likes M&Ms, Hershey's Kisses, jelly beans, etc. I watch her pretty closely and give her only a piece at a time because she also likes to cram it all in her mouth at once. She's the worst at this with cheese, of all things.

I'm okay with the chocolate because it melts.

  • Colin only gets candy (and by candy I mean 1 M&M) as a reward for something.  Otherwise, no candy.  So for Easter, the only candy he got was a little plastic egg with some M&Ms in them and if he's a good listener each day, he gets 1.  Same as hthomas-no candy and no juice.  We do fun little toys and books in stockings and Easter baskets instead.

  • I do a "no candy" house too! And lemme tell you something about black people!! They tend to have candy coming out their ears!!! When they have birthday parties..they bags are full of it!! I hate that...I usually sneak candy out and throw it away while the little ones aren't looking.  My party bags I give are full of toys and popcorn. Maybe one candy, or two if I am in a good mood!! Nkosi hates that I hate candy so much. He sneaks it in. I will occasionally find a wrapper in his pocket..or a few stashed in his drawer.

I remember Amiri sucking on a lollipop from the docs office. One minute he was slobbering on it then the next minute it was gone. I just thought he may have dropped it on the way to the car. As I was reversing out of the parking spot..Nkosi screamed that amiri was chewing on something. Yep..it was the lollipop stick....all gummed up and chewed up in his mouth.

They will have it on occasion...but they just dont know when to stop eating it. And I hate halloween. I would just rather they eat all the candy in one sitting, be sick, I brush their teeth..then it is done.

Call me the candy grinch. :)

  • "funny story" about me and no juice....when we just had Riley's 1st bday party I didn't have any juice, it didn't even occur to me to get any until our first guests walked in and the little boy asked for juice and cake immediately (because he knows when he goes to a party he gets juice and cake) and it was then that I was like "Oh ***, I don't have any juice".  not to worry, I had a friend bring some over (and threw the rest of it away after the party).

  • Welllll, I am not a juice OR a candy nazi, whoops :)  I mean we don't keep cookies or candy in the house, but I have no problem with him having a treat at a birthday party or on a holiday.  Hmmm, and juice, he gets a quarter sippy cup of juice (the Mott's for Tots that is already watered down, too) with 3/4 water just about everyday.

  • Not a juice or candy nazi either.....I've found if you tee total anything, it will just make people (little ones included) gorge when given the opportunity.   We limit our kids intake of both, but its not off limits.   Harrison and Avery love marshmallows, m&m's and Starburst jelly beans.  Right now grapes are candy to them too.

  • We do M&M's for rewards when she goes potty.

The grandparents gave her a chocolate bunny for Easter and we let her have a few bites at a time. She cries when we say it's time to stop, but that's OK she has to learn limits. So candy is not forbidden in the house but it is a treat and not an everyday thing.

    this

  • I let the kids eat candy.  And cookies, ice cream, sugared cereal, and the drink juice.  Most times it's watered down, but sometimes it's straight up.

Matter of fact, they have a "sweet treat" nearly every day if they've been good and eaten a good dinner.  I don't see the harm in it, and it's not like they are eating 30 peices of candy or cookies, it's a small amount.

    Ditto x2.

If DD finishes all her dinner, she gets a pack of fruit snacks or a cookie, or a cupcake.  Depends on what is in the house.  MIL brought mini cupcakes for Easter and DD loves them.

  • Yogos--both of mine love them.

Oh and Aerin (14 month old) accidentally ate a ton of Alec's jelly beans. It was these jelly beans that cured her fever and had her running around:)

Don't doubt the power of candy!! Great for bribing and rewarding!!
