making the switch to heparin

so this friday we switch over to 2x day heparin from the 1x lovenox...not happy about the extra shot a day, but actually what i am really nervous about is the pharmacy told me that there you can't get the syringes pre filled for heparin...any one have prefilled heparin shots? for some reason having to load the syringe creeps me out and really is making me anxious.

Re: making the switch to heparin

  • I don't think they have pre-filled heparin syringes.  I use insulin syringes and load the shot myself.  But, that's what I've always done.  I've never had the pre-filled Lovenox shot, so I couldn't say I wouldn't be nervous about the change too.

  • I dunno.....I don't know when my ob wants to make my switch.  Right now, we're taking it day by day with the BPPs and NSTs, so....I may not have time to switch before delivery, but I'd, too, hate the thought of filling my own needles.

  • I had to load my heparin syringes and it kind of creeped me out at first.  I felt like a drug user or something.  Lol.  I only had to do it for a couple of weeks before DD arrived, so it wasn't all that bad.

The worst part IMO was that the syringes they gave me at the pharmacy were super cheap-o and a lot of times the needle would bend or come off while I was trying to fill it.  That was a pain.

  • It bothered me too to load them but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I take it three times a day so 2x is not bad! How often do you take it? What is ice is that they are single dose vials, so you are not withdrawing the exact amount from a multi dose vial. Makes it SLIGHTLY easier :)
  • I just made the switch last week.  Here is my advice.  Put the needle in the vial and turn the vial upside down so you're pulling the plunger down to fill.  Go very slowly as you extract the Heparin.  If you notice air inside the syringe push the plunger up a bit to get rid of the air.  The actual filling of the syringe is what takes the longest for me.  I also set an alarm on my cell phone for 9 AM and 9 PM so I don't forget to do the 2x a day.  It won't be so bad once you've done it a couple times.  Luckily we won't have to do it for too long before we deliver!!

  • i figure i somewhat got used to the whole shot thing to start with  - hopefully it will be similar now with filling the syringes. just wanted to make sure my pharmacy was right about no pre filled options and not just telling me something to make me just go away!

  • The only pre-filled heparin that is made is for IV flushes and its only 200 units. And the vial you should use should be the total amount and that should only be 1ml. Good luck with the shots. I'm preparing myself for the evil progesterone shots starting in 2 weeks. UGH... I would rather have the sub-q heparin 2x day than the 1x week IM shots. Oh well the things we do for our LO.
