Baby Names

How to make family names work for a girl?

My grandfather and grandfather in law just passed away, and I think it would be great if we could somehow incorporate both of their names in our baby's name.  Their names are Stanley Edward and Marvin Jay.  Any ideas on how to make one great girl name from both?

  • Jada instead of Jay. Does Edward have a middle name? Some female names close to Ed but are not my style: Edna, Edwina, Edda or Eda

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Those are hard. All I can come up with is Marla for Marvin. Maybe Eden for Edward, but that may be stretching it.
  • I work with a Jaelle (Jay-elle) and i always found her name to be pretty. Jayda/Jada, Jayde/Jade, Jayne/Jane..Other than Edna and Edina i cant think of any other forms of those very masculine names. Maybe wait until you have a son to use the others.
  • I would save the names for a little boy and not butcher their names to make them "fit" a little girl.  It is not much of a honor IMO when you butcher the name.

I thought of this, although I'm not sure that I would want to use the regular versions.  I do really like a lot of the ideas like Edie, Eddie, Jane, Jay-something, and Mary.  I'll run these by my husband.  Thanks ladies!

  • What about just using the same initials? Maybe SM or MS?

  • Looking at other suggestions, I think I'd go for Eden Jane or Jane Edith.

  • In the Jewish faith, many people simply use the first letter of the person they are honoring.  I dont' feel the entire name needs to be the 'same'.  Use the first letter from each one and find girls names you like w/ those letters.

  • Marley Jade? Combination of both first names and similar letters from both middle names. I know, not the greatest choice but the first I thought of. GL!!
  • Marvina? I agree Marley is a good choice though - sort of combines both the names.

I love this.  My first thought was Eddi Jay, but I like Eddi(e) Jayne even better.

  • i don't know how you could use both but i would use stanley as a mn for a girl. it is so much better than using two female first names imo [that's one of my pet peeves] and doesn't sound weird because stanley is also a last name.
