Brushing LO's teeth

Tips?  Tricks?  When did you start?  I busted out the toothbrush a couple nights ago and tried to do a little run over his two bottom teeth but he did not love it.  I didn't really get in there too well anyway.  I just wanted to try to start getting him used to it.  Maybe I should try giving it to him as a "toy" so he can just play with it and I'm sure he will end up sticking one end of it in his mouth that way.

Re: Brushing LO's teeth

  • i have the baby banana brush and i let ds have it as a toy, when he is in the bath.  he likes to chew on the bristles.  i used to be able to take a wash cloth in wipe his teeth off, but he HATES it now.  i still try, but he is squirming so much and seals his lips shut so its gotten so hard.  i try to help him with the brush, but he hates that too.

  • What kind of brush do you have?  I use the soft, rubbery gum brush and LO really likes it.  I think it helps relieve her teething pain.  I have to admit, I'm not good about using it every day but I try to do it on most days.  She has two bottom teeth as well.

  • We just use a wash cloth to wipe their teeth.  We usually do it right after breakfast and dinner, as we're cleaning off their faces.
  • I have a little finger brush and we brush his teeth during his bath.  He didn't appreciate it at first but now he loves it.  All we have to say is "toothbrush" and he turns and opens his mouth for it.  So cute!

  • I should get a different toothbrush.  All we have is one that came with a grooming/health kit by Safety 1st.  It just looks like a miniature adult toothbrush.  I shall go search for a new one!

  • We have the banana toothbrush too (got it after a few bumpies on her posted about it).  It works like a charm.  I give it to DS when I take him out of the bath and he chews on it and plays with it while I'm getting him dressed.  After I finish, I brush his gums.  He's really cooperative.  We tried the finger brush and that was a big fat fail.  We used to be able to wipe his gums with a washcloth, but he won't let us do that anymore either.

  • It's hard, but it's really important to brush their teeth just like you brush yours.  (My dad's a dentist, and he was shocked that some pediatricians tell parents not to worry about brushing babies' teeth until they're a year old!!)

DD just has a regular toothbrush (it's kiddie sized and pink).  I started letting her hold and play with it before she got teeth.  Now, I brush her teeth morning and night.

I try not to fight her too much on it -- I let her hold and play with the brush first, then I take it and say, "brush your teeth!" to get her to open her mouth for me.  I brush the four teeth she has, then swipe her gums to get her used to having her whole mouth brushed.  Sometimes she opens right up and lets me brush, sometimes she fights me.  If she fights, I have to hold her in the crook of my elbow and hold her hands in my left hand while I quickly brush with my right hand.
