Joelsgirl...

I wanted to ask you a few questions because I know your son is around my son's age and they both have reflux. Could you tell me what your son is taking medication -wise and how it is working for him? Also, when you started him on solids, did you notice anything in particular aggravating his reflux?

I found out at the dr. today the reason Cason has probably been refusing to nurse. She checked and he has a sore throat and fluid in his ears, but not an ear infection. She said it is a result of GERD and that some of those stomach juices have actually gotten up into his ears. He had been doing so well and I had not noticed any symptoms with him since he was about 2 months old. So, naturally I'm wondering why this got exacerbated right now. We started him on solids at 6 months and have been introducing new things. I just wonder if something we fed him might have set this off. It's very frustrating. He will nurse sometimes but not other times. Sometimes, even just bringing him onto the boppy pillow with make him scream and cry, before I even lay him down. So, I think he's got a really negative association going on right now. She did up his dosage of Prilosec today to the max amount he can take. I'm really hoping it kicks in soon, because I think we are both seriously stressed about the nursing difficultly. Thanks for any thoughts you have!

  • Awww! I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. Reflux bites. Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. Eli is on Prevacid. He currently takes 15 mg in the morning and 7.5mg at night - almost an adult dose. He was on axid from 2-4 weeks and then we went to Prevacid - 1st 7.5 mg 2x daily, then at 3 mon we had to up it again to the current dose.

    2. Eli's reflux is aggravated by rice and rice products - MumMums, rice cereal, puffs, anything where there is rice flour. He has not had a problem with wheat though. Also, avocados seem to make him pukey. Also, I can't drink liquid cow's milk. I haven't had real milk since he was 2 months old.

    3. Fluid in the ears could be enough reason for him not to want to lay down. I would try nursing him sitting up. I do it with Eli out of convenience, but it's good for reflux, too. I sit him straddling my leg or I sit him on the floor in front of me.

If you end up going to GI, I recommend GI Care for Kids through CHOA - we see Dinesh Patel and we LOVE him. feel free to email me if you ever need anything - code3chica@yahoo.com

  • Thanks so much! Yes, I was trying to figure out what might have caused this little flare up because he was doing so well on a really low dose of Prilosec. The only new thing I fed him right before this happened was brown rice cereal. I had fed him just regular rice cereal off and on since he turned 6 months, but I started the brown rice cereal just because someone had given me a can of the Happy Bellies kind. I'm not sure if something about it being brown rice could have triggered it. Maybe brown rice is harder to digest than white rice...not sure. It's interesting that Eli is aggravated by rice products.

I like the tip about changing nursing positions. It's so strange, though, because he ended up feeding just fine at lunch and when I got home from work yesterday laying propped up on his side, but then he freaked when I tried to feed him at bedtime. I did try just sitting him up on my lap after he had calmed down, but the minute I angled my boob toward his mouth, he lost it again! I felt so bad for him and like there's something wrong with me. I will keep that GI doc in mind, though, in case this doesn't seem to get back under control. Thanks again!

  • Aww.....just go with it. Maybe you should try prevacid instead of prilosec. Also, we give DS Mylanta sometimes (per GI's permission) he gets 1.5 ml.

Also, could he be teething? Have you tried giving him motrin to maybe ease the pain in his ears/teething?
