Tantrums?

So we've hit the "tantrum stage." If I don't let him do something he's not supposed to do or take away something he shouldn't play with but wants to-tantrum ensues. What do I do at this age? I think he's too young for time out. Do I just walk away and ignore him? If so how long did it take before they got it. Suggestions? TIA!

Re: Tantrums?

  • I usually just let DS throw the tantrum and not give in to him. Sometimes I also try to distract him with something he can have.

For example, tonight while I was making dinner he threw a fit b/c he wanted a snack. I told him he could have 1 cookie. Well, he came back looking for more. I told him that he couldn't have one, but could have something healthy for him. That worked to satisfy him. Sometimes we eat a little late and I know he is hungry, so I feel bad not giving him something even if it does spoil his dinner. As long as it is a healthy snack, I don't mind.

  • I just ignore it. It's their only way right now of expressing frustration.

  • Let them fit it out.  That's what I do with LO.  I've seen to many kids at school who it still works for at home.  I had a 2nd grader last year who would throw herself on the floor and and cry in front of anyone.  It was crazy.  I just step over DD and go in the other room.  She stops in a few minutes.
