3rd Trimester

If you express colostrum will it increase the production?

I'm talking pre baby. I started leaking quite a bit about 3 weeks ago. In the morning and before bed I started expressing what I could so I wouldn't leak as much during the day or night, but it seems like I'm producing a lot more than when I first started leaking. I'm wondering if it's due to the expressing or if it's just because my body is naturally producing more.

Re: If you express colostrum will it increase the production?

  • Your body responds to requests in production, which is you expressing.  I'd be very careful about doing this as nipple stimulation can bring about labor and you're a bit early for that.

  • You are not supposed to because doing this can bring on Labor.

  • I started leaking at 18 weeks and have been expressing this whole time, I don't know whether the extra colostrum being produced with me is because of that or just because i'm further along now.
  • Expressing brings on milk production when your actual milk comes in...

This.  Once you have the baby, expressing colostrum/pumping can help bring your milk in, but it's not recommended before the baby is born because it's a labor stimulant.  Sort of sends your body a real mixed message, and hormones are fickle things.

  • I was told in our labor & delivery class that this will only possibly help bring on labor if your body is actually ready to go into labor, so it shouldn't cause any contractions if it is too early for your body to do so.
