Jack's birthday is in 2 weeks and I was going to do a farm thing with a barn cake and animal cupcakes, but then realized that I was totally stealing my friend's idea. She doesn't care, and we have none of the same party guests, but I still feel like it isn't my thing, it's hers...so then I was thinking that, since we are planning on having hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, etc., that a picnic theme could be fun. I found some cute pictures of cakes with little ants, a plate of food, and a red/white check background. Which cake theme would you go with? I already bought red/white plates, napkins, cups, and all of that, so either cake would work fine. [Poll]
Re: Clicky Poll: Which 1st birthday theme for Jack?
I just made yellow cake cupcakes. Then, I made homemade chocolate pudding, but you can use any kind of chocolate pudding you like. I piled some of that on top of the cupcakes. For the topping, I put oreos in the food processor and sprinkled the crumbs over the pudding. Then, I just put a gummy worm in each one. I can PM you some more pics from the party if you're interested in the other stuff, but here are the cakes:
I love the picnic theme, and I think there are tons of fun things you can do with that! G's party last year was super cute!
I'm just butting in here also to mention something about the dirt cups. I used this recipe to make the layers for dirt cups a couple weeks ago for R's preschool and the white layer is SO good. I have made this dessert in a pan like that before, but for the dirt cups, I just made the white and chocolate layers and layered them with crushed Oreos.

I'd probably choose the picnic theme simply b/c it's easier, and the dirt cake is soo fun/easy (and works with Jack's dietary needs).
If you did do the farm theme, though, love, love, LOVE this Etsy seller and this little farm hat is the cutest thing!

She made a custom hat for DS#2's first birthday (elphant theme with candle in the trunk) and it was just so, so precious! Totally made the day (and the photos). Teresa is awesome and I bet she could make a cute picnic hat, too (thinking of the cute little ants, a piece of watermelon, etc.)
Can't believe he'll be one in two weeks - where did this year go?!!!
