Babies: 3 - 6 Months

my milk supply is decreasing :(

I drink tons of fluids, I eat healthy, pump twice a day at work, breast feed whenever I am with DS and pump while I feed him sometimes I just don't understand why I can only get a maximum of 6 ounces per day at work. It is so incredibly frustrating.

Re: my milk supply is decreasing :(

  • It is frustrating. My supply is low to begin with and I feel like it is decreasing as well. Plus, J decided this weekend that he didn't want to nurse me and instead took a bottle all weekend. That was very frustrating!

  • ahh! i WISH i got that much when i pump. =( mine is decreasing also. i get like 3-4 oz TOTAL when i pump. it makes me sad. i can NOT imagine not BFing her.

i'm getting some mother's milk tea and some fenugreek to see if it helps.

  • My supply started decreasing when he was sleeping through the night and I got my period (he no longer sleeps through the night and I only got my period once so far... months ago Tongue Tied) but anyways...

I took fenugreek (got it at GNC) 3 pills twice a day- you can take more but I heard you know that you are taking enough if you start to smell like maple syrup.

I also drink Mothers Milk Tea sometimes

and I heard if you eat oatmeal at breakfast it will help.

     Good luck!

  • Mine has seriously crashed and as of this past weekend, I only BF 2-3 times a day and FF with a bottle the rest.  It's a mentally hard transition at first, but DD is starting to realize how easy bottles are and doesn't have a problem with formula at all.

You may want to try the Mother's Milk Tea or Fenugreek or Lactation Cookies.  Good luck! And don't let it get you down too much.  If you are doing your best, then there isn't anything to be disappointed about.

  • I am sorry.  I know how frustrating it can be.  I had mastitis and I am still working on getting my supply up.  Do you give him any solids?  That could be a reason why your supply is decreasing.  We just started Mason on solids and he's still eating 5-6 ounces every 3-4 hours.  At least I assume that what he's getting from what I can tell when I pump during the week.  I would just keep at it.  I know it's easier said than done.

  • I googled fenugreek and think I am going to try it (can't hurt right?!) Thanks for the kind words. I really really enjoy breast feeding, I was planning on stopping when he was 6 months or as soon as he cut his first tooth. I am not looking forward to stopping (dreading it actually).

  • my health food store carries fennugreek.  Though it was cheaper on Amazon if you can get the free shipping.  I think it's helping a bit for me, but not all that much.  I'm trying the mother's milk tea starting today for my low supply in addition to the fennugreek.

  • I have noticed a decrease in my supply from exercising.  Usually I can get it going again by pumping more.

  • You can get fenugreek from most whole foods stores, also whole foods sells "flax paks" that I put in applesauce everyday... flax helps increase your supply as well.  That is where I got it.  Also, what helped me was eating oatmeal for breakfast.  With the oatmeal and the flax (fenugreek did not work for me, made baby waaaayyyy too gassy) I am able to put about 8 ounces each time.
  • I realized last week how much the Fenugreek affects my supply. I have been taking it since LO was born to support BFing and I ran out and didn't have any in my system for 24 hours. I literally dropped to half supply. I usually pump 10-12oz/day at work and that day I pumped 5. There was just nothing else in there! I get my Fenugreek at Whole Foods, which is next door to my work, and I was over there that day to stock back up. It makes a big difference. Also I was drinking the organic Mother's Milk tea all day long as a backup.
