I think you can do it. I would prefer it myself. I think probably a lot of people go lighter because most baby bedding sets are pastel. JCP.com has a bright colored set - I think it's called Splash. It's so cute. It's pink and green (and blue and green for boys).
There is also a girl on the deco board on the nest that did her daughter's room in the bright pink and green. I can't find her right now. I think her name is June 24 bride. The room is super cute. She did horizontal stripes. It's in her blog. Her daughter is a little older - not a newborn.
I think I am going this route too but will probably have the walls painted in a lighter shade of pink since an intense color might be hard to take. I found some cute bright rugs and will also do it with the window treatments, wall decals etc.
If you click on the link to our blog, I have it set to posts that pertain to this current pregnancy, and if you scroll down, you'll see a bunch of pics for the room in progress.

This was the baby room in our house when we bought it...is this what you mean??
Ours is.
Bright green (SW Picnic on walls), orange, and bright pink.
Bedding is a mix of retired PBK (Mia bumper) and handmade crib skirt from Hobby Lobby fabric. I made the curtains, too.
