excersise weight loss and bf..

So I have a few questions.

I would like to lose weight, but I am EBF.  how do you lose weight and EBF?  I am lost.  How do you eat enough calories, for the bab, but not enough to put on weight?

Also- I have taken back up running (YIPPPEE) BUT.... when I run, I leak :( .  IT TOTALLY BITES.  Its like little bits of pee seep out.  I didn't have a C-section, I was all natural, and I don't leak normally.  Just when I run, does this happen to anyone else?   I try to pee before I go, but it doesn't seem to help all that much.  I came back yesterday SOAKED :(

I have lost 20 pounds but I sort of have platued.  I want to lose more weight before I stop BFing, (BFing seems to be the secret so far)

 Anyone have any thoughts?

Re: excersise weight loss and bf..

  • Because you are BFing, your body tends to hold onto some extra weight. Just the way it works. That isn't saying you can't lose more weight, but don't expect to drop all the weight you want while BFing. Just focus on eating quality calories like fruits and veggies and continuing to exercise. If you are determined to lose more weight, you might try changing up your exercise routine. That can sometimes jump-start things.

For the leaking... KEGELS. Twice a day.

    Good luck!!

  • I agree that some women's bodies hold onto a little extra fat while BFing.  I am one of those women, apparently.  With DD, I dropped all but about 7 lbs right away, but that 7 lbs stuck around for the entire 16 months I was BFing, even though I started going to the gym and joined WW.

As for cutting calories, the way you have to look at it is that your body needs 500 additional calories over your regular intake to feed baby and maintain your weight.  If you are trying to lose weight, you don't need the whole 500 additional calories.  You want to create a calorie deficit so that your body -- through metabolic function, BFing, and any exercise you're doing -- is burning more than you are taking in.  But, to protect your supply, you won't want to lose more than 1-2 lbs per week.  Dropping too much weight at once (ha -- I am struggling with the one lb per week) could hurt supply.

A cumulative calorie deficit of 3500 calories = 1 lb.  So, over a week, you would need to create a calorie deficit of 500 cal/day to burn one pound.  Theoretically, you could eat your normal diet, and BF, and the BFing alone would burn those calories each day.  However, I think my metabolism has really slowed while BFing, so I am having to cut some calories out of my diet (I am having a hard time finding time to exercise with two kids).  I really started trying to lose this weight about a week ago.  It is SLOW going for me.  I have about 9 lbs to go.  (I've only lost a pound since about 2 weeks pp!)

    GL!
