Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

who wants to tell me rules for whole milk?

We just switched mason from formula to whole cow's milk and I was wondering what the rules are as far as if he were to start to drink a bottle or sippy cup of milk and not finish it does it have an hour expiration like formula?  Or can it be put back in the fridge and reheated later? How long can it sit out at room temp?  Anything else I need to know? Also do the same rules apply to Lactaid? Looks like he might have a lactose intolerance so we may have to switch :/  TIA!!!

  • we give a sippy of whole milk at every meal.  what she doesn't finish goes back in the fridge when the meal is over.  we don't heat it though.  it's always cold.  she gets water the rest of the time.  and lactaid would be the same. and the bonus is it stays fresh a lot longer than regular milk.  the expiration date is usually 3-4 weeks out from purchase.

  • DS still gets one bottle--first thing in the am. That one is heated, the rest are cold, but we had such a hard time getting him to drink it cold (we started him on milk at 10m) that I sometimes put a little chocolate in it--I figure I'll allow the extra sugar if it means he's getting the dairy/calcium he needs. Works great, he sucks the whole sippy down. I never let his milk sit out longer than half and hour/hour, and I'm working on getting him to use the playtex insulated sippys so that it stays cold longer when we're out (right now he's on the nuby sippy straw cups--hate them).

As for how much they need--I know that the gerber booklet I got for toddler menus said that at each meal and snack they should get about 2-3 oz of milk.
