selling clothes to OUAC?

I've got a ton of stuff that I want to get rid of. I have the option of being a seller at a massive consignment sale in April, but the time commitment is kind of crazy (5:30AM to noon). I can sell the bigger stuff on Craigslist, but I think it would be a PITA to list clothes. If you've sold clothes at OUAC, how much do they usually give you per piece?

I honestly have no idea. I think if you asked them to, they would go through piece by piece and tell you what they are giving, but I've never had the patience for that. I know it's not a lot, but I figure it's a two way street: I like to buy things there much cheaper than the original price and they need to be able to buy items very cheap in order to still sell them cheap. Plus, it's much easier than listing on ebay or craigslist. Sorry I'm not much help.

Have you thought of selling in "lots" on ebay? That way you don't have to list them individually but still will get much more money than OUAC. I sell (and buy!) a lot on ebay. I think honestly that would be your best bet. GL

Not much.... they give the most for Gymboree, Children's Place, etc. But still it's not much... I think they're general rule of thumb is 25% of retail value.. so you know $5 for a $20 romper from Gymboree. But that's best case scenario for perfect condition and stuff in the stores right now.... that $5 goes down based on condition and if it's a design from last year, kwim?

For stuff that's not a 'fancy' brand... like Target stuff it's way less... like 40 or 50 cents for a like new onesie.... maybe a $1 for a sleeper.

It could be worth it if you have lots of the higher end stuff they want...

I took stuff once... but since I figured out how it works I'd just rather donate or give to someone I know. If I ever wanted to sell clothes I think I'd try to sell the whole bag of stuff for a lump sum on Craigslist.

I did have better luck with the big ticket stuff... a few slings, an infant swing, bumbo, etc. They gave me $37 for the swing (It was a little over $100 new... was in perfect condition because it really hadn't ever been used since Henry hated it I feel like I would have gotten $40ish on CL and this way I didn't have to deal with the hassle of people not showing up, etc. The 2 peanut shell's they gave me $12.50 for... I paid about $40 each for those and they were pretty well loved... I might have asked $15 for them on CL.

Thanks ladies.

I usually just give away the clothes, but I figured if I was going to be wasting 5 hours of a Saturday to try to sell some other stuff I might as well try it.

Oh well. Hopefully someone else can benefit from Charlie's outgrown stuff!

It's just a certain percentage of what they plan to sell it for but I have no idea what that percentage is. I've never asked. For me it is just about getting rid of stuff I don't want to hang on to more than anything. I've sold on Craigslist before and definitely made more money but like you I just felt like listing the clothes was a pain. That being said, I'd do the rummage sale! Adam and I had a yard sale the summer before last and made almost $300 on stuff I never would have imagined people would pay money for, seriously crap that I would have sooner just thrown in the trash! Baby clothes (which I wouldn't have thrown in the trash) were a hot seller!

OUAC doesn't give you much. I have sold there once and I took a tub or 2 of clothes in. They were busy so I ran some other errands and came back and they showed me what they could give me for each piece. To me it wasn't worth the hassle of taking all the stuff in - espeically when you can make more money off ebay.

FWIW I went to see our tax guy yesterday. He told me that I needed to start keeping an itemized list of what I donate (re: clothing) instead of just putting 3 bags of clothes. He said the best way to do it is to take the list that Goodwill gives that tells how much each item is worth and just do tally marks as you pack them up and then attach the Goodwill receipt to the tally sheet after you make your donation. I thought this was brilliant! He said anymore people are losing out on major tax deductions because they, like me, just guesstimate. He said a couple bags of clothes could easily be worth $1000-$2000.

I wouldn't sell them to a nestie, if I'm giving them to someone I know then I'm just going to give them away. That's what I usually do, anyway, but if I was going to invest the time into the consignment sale then I would sell the clothes there, too!

He's currently between a 12-18 months (of course, it depends on the brand); but I'm waiting for him to take off, which will happen as soon as I take the tags off of his new stuff. He got a bunch of size 18 month and size 24 month summer clothes for his birthday. We may need a few more basics to get us through summer (mix and match tees and shorts, size 5-6 shoes, swim trunks, etc. type of stuff), and I'd even be interested in looking at any fall/winter stuff (24 months +)...but I just hate kind of guessing on where he'll be come fall/winter, KWIM?

He got a bunch of size 18 month and size 24 month summer clothes for his birthday. We may need a few more basics to get us through summer (mix and match tees and shorts, size 5-6 shoes, swim trunks, etc. type of stuff), and I'd even be interested in looking at any fall/winter stuff (24 months +)...but I just hate kind of guessing on where he'll be come fall/winter, KWIM?

He's was 29" at his 1 year appt. Pajama sets would be fantastic! Thanks so much for checking. BTW - Brian has a Yankees shirt that he wears all the time. Jacob actually had a yankees outfit, last summer, too. I'll have to dig up a pic. Smile

Our size issue is more with the waist than the length. C could easily be wearing 24m/2T pants, but they would fall off his waist, even with the adjustables. I can get away with it at home because his diapers are so puffy, but not so much at daycare. I'm just glad it's warm now because the length of his shorts won't matter as much!
