Question re: picky eating

If you have a picky eater and they refuse what you've made them for lunch, do you offer something else?  Do you keep offering different things until they eat something?  Or do you just figure they're not hungry and offer again later?

I usually offer 1 other thing and if he doesn't eat it I figure he's not hungry and he'll eat when he is.  MIL who watches DS has been offering him other things including fast food- chicken nuggets and fries.  DS ends up eating the fast food and so she does this 2 days in a row.  I don't like DS eating fast food and I have never fed him fries.  I wouldn't mind if it was 1x-2x/month but not 2 days back to back.  I am worried that this is going to cause a habit of him only eating junk food.  What do you think?

Re: Question re: picky eating

  • I have started letting her "not eat" if she's being super picky. She still gets snacks and usually makes up for it at the next meal. If I'm offering something new I will offer her something else if she rejects it (usually does) but otherwise I don't want meal times to be a struggle so if it's something she's eaten before it's all I offer. The only thing I'm hoping doesn't happen is that she refuses to eat the offered meal and then screams for cookies and the like :(

  • DS is offered what we are eating and if he doesn't eat he waits until the next meal or snack. I almost always have one thing with his meal that I know he will eat. It is usually fruit. I would be upset with the fast food, but I also don't allow DS to have it. I definitely wouldn't want it two days in a row.
  • My DS is very picky he has maybe a dozen things he will eat.  I make him what I know he will eat and maybe giving him an opition once a day of something I'm not sure he will eat.  DH is better at uoptions then I am - I can't stand making him things he won't eat.

About your mil that is a tricky situation.  Maybe talk to her (or you and DH) about what things are good to try and what healthy opitions she can give him that he will eat as back ups.  I only have our baby sitter feed DS things I know he will eat and save trying different options for me or DH.  I hope things get better.

  • Well, first, I wouldn't give him more than 1 other thing if he doesn't eat the first thing you gave him. Secondly, I would not give him fast food 2 days in a row. To me, that is giving in to the child b/c you know he will eat that. So, now he will make an association b/t refusing his food and getting fast food.
  • Thanks ladies, you've reassured my instincts and given me more confidence in addressing this with MIL!
