3rd Trimester

Are you putting a TV in your LO's nursery?

Dh wants to hang a flat screen tv on the wall in LO's room over his changing table. I'm kind of torn. Dh wants one in the room for himself for when he is rocking LO to sleep, he can watch TV. I don't like the idea of having a TV in LO's room simply because I don't want LO in his room watching TV until much older.

I can understand Dh's point because if there is a football game on or something and he's rocking LO, he will want to be at least listening to the game.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Are you putting a TV in your LO's nursery?

  • They say that TV is not good for babies eyes...so I vote no.

We will not have a tv in the babies room.

  • We not only have no TV in the nursery, we won't have one in the kids' rooms either.  The studies I've seen have said that it doesn't matter whether the kids are actively watching the tv or not, just having it in the room is detrimental to their brain development.  Not to mention that I know DH is much less attentive to what's going on around him when the tv is on, I wouldn't want him paying more attention to a stupid football game than the baby!
  • BTW I would tell DH tough it out..... you can take some time AWAY from the TV to be with his baby.

  • I really wouldn't, but it's not my house we're talking about.  We just don't do TVs in bedrooms, period.  If he's trying to get a baby to sleep though, couldn't a show playing defeat the purpose? :-)
  • Nope, my DH wanted this too but we decided he could just watch TV downstairs and use his recliner to rock her. It's not ideal in terms of trying to lay her down right after she falls asleep but I think it's better than getting her used to the noise of a TV all the time. I'm afraid she would need it to fall asleep as she gets older.

  • There was almost an identical post on the 2nd tri board this morning. Opinions were most certainly flowing there....
  • Were not - could you convince dad to listen to the game while looking at the baby?

  • We are not putting a table in LO's nursery. I don't believe that it belongs in there right now.
  • My newborn didn't watch TV, but we did have one in the nursery to keep me company while BFing.  By about 3 or 4 months, I had to watch it with the volume off and we removed it completely by the time DD was 6 months old b/c it was too distracting to her while nursing.
  • Absolutely not. And if DH is rocking LO to sleep, I wouldn't really want him to be watching football anyway.

  • NO WAY!  We did put a radio in there for some soothing music and I suppose if he really wanted to, he could listen to football that way...but DH already spends time in the rocker/recliner in the baby's room, so I don't think he'll need any stimulation:o)

  • No, both DH and I feel that it would not be a good thing to have a TV in LO's nursery.  If she wants a TV in her room later on (like when she's in middle school), she'll have to ask us then.

  • Maybe just don't mount it to the wall but use the stand instead.  It's hard enough to stay awake when you're sleep deprived and rocking in the dark anyway.  I remember watching lots of TV with DS.  DH will probably just go to the living room if there isn't a TV in LO's room. It's not like the baby will be able to focus on it for a while anyway.  I know it sounds cute with the whole "don't want to miss out on bonding thing", but there will be plenty of chances for that as often as LO will be feeding.  Middle of the night TV to give you something to do is fine IMO.
  • Absolutely not. I won't ever let this kid have a TV in his room. When he moves out into his own place - that's when he can have a TV in his bedroom. :)

Lol! Must've missed it. I'm not done catching up on 3rd tri and haven't even clicked on 2nd tri just yet. I'm going to have to check it out.
  • NO!

DH rocked DS to sleep and just enjoyed spending time with him. Instead of a flatscreen in the room, get T-VO or some sort of DVR. That way, DH and you can spend quality time with LO and then watch TV later.

  • No way!

  • No.

If either of us are up with the baby in the middle of the night and want to watch TV, we can watch it downstairs.

  • the nursery is my DD's old bedroom so there is a directv box in there (we don't have a tv in our bedroom, an we'd have to have them come run the lines to move the box to our room)...there is also a small tube tv in there from when DH was painting the nursery and watching the game...I don't know that it will stay, but if it does or he gets a flat screen it will be with the explicit instructions that it stays off while trying to get baby to sleep...I really don't think there will be one in there at all.

This is why I was thinking it was okay. I'd probably have it off when I am in there. Great, now I can buy something to hang over his changing table. Yipee!!  Big Smile
  • Nope, we don't even have a tv in our room.

Us either.   This has NEVER come up for discussion.

If he MUST watch TV, why can't he put the baby to sleep where you already have a TV?  Sounds like a ploy to get a new one, honestly.

  • No, we will not be having a TV in DD's room...
  • Well I will be the minority here.... My LO will be sharing a room with DD#1, who is 7 and has a small TV in her room.

I personally would not have a  problem with my DH rocking LO while watching the game. I'd be watching something during those feeding times too.

That being said we have a cosleeper in our room for LO for the first few months and well... we have a 52" flatscreen mounted in our bedroom.

  • Personally, I wouldn't. I wouldn't want to expose my child to TV that early on in their life. Also, I wouldn't put anything big and heavy above my LO's change table.
  • Seriously?? I can see wanting to watch TV while you are rocking the baby to sleep or whatever but couldn't you go to your living room or bedroom (if you have a TV there) to do this? I am super against having a TV in the babies room.

  • Yes. I dont want to be sitting in the dark tired and bored when I'm nursing in the middle of the night. When he is old enough for it to be a destraction it will come out.

This made me chuckle. We got one a long time ago for our "workout" room that never got used. So, when we moved into our bigger house, he took this tv (32 inch) and put it in our bedroom and removed the big one we had in there previously. I now hate the TV because it's too small and he said it would be perfect for LO's room. So no, no new one here. We don't have room for a rocking chair in the living room, so he would be rocking LO to sleep in LO's room.

I don't want a TV in our bedroom but Dh has to have it on to go to sleep. He doesn't even watch it. He lays there with his eyes closed and just listens. His mother is the same way. Me personally, I can't sleep when the darn thing is on, so it's usually a battle.

  • We have a really small one (just a step up from a portable -about the size of a laptop screen) we might put in there for our own use when we're up late at night. But no intentions of leaving it in the room once baby is STTN.

    No, I'm totally joking. Hmm

Yes, I'm serious or I wouldn't have asked. And no, Dh can't go to the living room to rock the baby because we don't have anything to rock baby with.

    What are your thoughts?

How about looking at his sleeping baby? I'm sorry, there is nothing on tv worth more than my children. Also, above the changing table?? Geeze hope the thing doesn't come crashing down.

  • When DD was little, we'd rock her/I'd breastfeed her in the living room with the TV on, sound off.  We didn't let her watch it, but it was on when she was in the room.

If you don't have any other place to rock LO, I don't see a problem to having one in there to give yourselves something to do, nor do I see it having a lot to do with TV vs. no TV for babies/kids as long as you take it out when LO does get old enough to start watching (which will be after you stop needing to have a distraction for yourself in there).
