Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby not using hands yet?

Ds is 14 weeks and his hands are still tightly closed the better part of the day. He doesn't bat at toys with his fists and hasn't shown any signs of being close to picking things up. So my question is... when did your DC started using his/her hands? I'm probably overreacting, as he's healthy and thriving in every other developmental phase. Thank you for your input!

Re: Baby not using hands yet?

  • If you are really worried talk to your pedi about it. I thought DS was late in that arena as well but all babies are different. He started to open his hands about 2-3 weeks ago but by no means does he know what he is doing with them :)

  • dd started reaching for things around 3-4 months. closed hands at first. now she grabs everything and is an old pro at it. they learn really quick. don't worry!

  • It was 16 weeks when I noticed Emerson laying on her back and I would put something a few inches from her face and she would put both arms out and very slowly bring them both forward to touch it.

Your little man is okay...don't rush him.

  • Thank you Ladies :)
  • My son started batting at things about 3-4 weeks ago, it first started with a toy that goes across his car seat so we then got him a musical mobile for over his crib and he started flailing his arms and kicking his legs at that, also the activity mat really gets him going. He also plays with his hands and our hands now - this just started about a week ago. His movements aren't smoothe but he definitley gets excited.

i'm sure you're  fine, all babies develop differently then one another but if you're worried then it doesn't hurt to ask your pedi
  • I actually met an ot from birth - 3 yesterday and she said that the closed fists stay around so long because of a lack of tummy time. When they are on their tummies, they use their hands more and build the strength and flexibility they need. My son is 10 weeks old and able to grab at objects but doesn't do it frequently. She said more tummy time will help develop this.
